I disassembled this so long ago, I do not remember (and did not photograph) the sequence of hardware that attaches the grill (and radiator) to the front crossbeam. I know that there were (at least) two rubber rings, but how many washers, tubes, other hardware pieces go through there?

    Slowly coming along B^)

    O.K.-

Bolt (7/16x20x2.25) goes down thru hole in bottom of grill

Insert tube into first rubber doughnut

Stick tube & doughnut down thru frame mount

Drop grill & bolt through tube

Slip second doughnut up over tube

One washer & nut screwed onto bottom of bolt

    Have

So when it is all in place, Counting from the head of the bolt, it seees:
    (1) Grill
    (2) Rubber donut
    (3) Frame
    (4) Rubber donut
    (5) Washer
    (6) Nut

And a tube runs inside the donut-frame-donut holes...

    Is that about right?

I had to make the holes in the new rubber parts big enough for the tube, but that did the trick.

Tubes actually, 6L6s mounted in a class B- oh, wait, sorry, wrong spot, those are for Fenders

Grill tube, item 9 although they've actually miss-labeled it as a "spacer"-

Geez. How is this for timing? I was just going to post a question about my grill and found this thread. Must be fate. Sorry. I don't mean to hijack your thread.

Looking at the parts page you included, I now think the grill that came with my '59 is from a different year. The bottom mounting flange looks a little home made (that's an understatement) and the head lights are enclosed at the rear. There's a flange on the front, as you'll see below.

The Jeep was hit in the front in a previous life, bending the frame horns and fender fronts. The grill is obviously replaced from another vehicle, as the base paint is yellow and mine was originally green. The top of the grill also seems a little higher than stock, as the space between the fenders and hood is pretty wide near the front. (half to 5/8") The PO seems to have been less than honest about the Jeep's past life, not counting that I was maybe not paying close enough attention.

At any rate, anyone have a clue what this grill is out of? Thanks.

    Bruce,
That's a late model CJ grille. The Radiator mounts were appearantly fabed to make the stock radiator fit. Late model grilles mounted basically the same way.

Thanks, Tuffluck. I was thinking it didn't look right. The way it fits seems like the later model grill is a little taller than the early one. Does anyone know if that is true? It would certainly explain a lot about the hood alignment.

    Oh well. Live and learn...

Does anyone know if the heights of early and later CJ5 grills are the same?
