Not sure if this is the right forum for this but my 66 was undercoated. When I was flipping through the Air Force marking manual it stated all vehicles must be undercoated when they are prepped with undercoating spec ######. In the back of the manual it lists it as solvent, asphalt and filler asbestos. I knew it was in brake and clutch linings but never thought about undercoating. I would assume most undercoatings of the era were simmilar. Mine is somewhat dried out and I was planning to take a large wire wheel to it. Glad I didn't, I would have that dust everywhere and breathing it for I dont know how long. Just a heads up when working around it.

That crap is everywhere. I never would have thought of undercoating though. Good find.

Likely you could use a heat gun and scrape. I'd have a sample tested.

It's like the Transite shingle siding they used on houses around here. Perfectly safe as long as they are not disturbed. They continue to function as siding.

Libby, MT is basically a superfund site from

Ok, used for lots of stuff...

Libby, Montana — The Asbestos Outbreak

Family in that area. Grew up in the summers there. Yard worms were amazing for catching fish on the river... may be that is why the metal rods attached to the lamp shade cord worked so good to get them up out of the dirt.

I agree with Tim, scrape it off, maybe with some heat to help.

asbestos is certainly dangerous but i have not heard that incidental exposure of small quantities for brief time periods is danngerous, the people who have suffered from it all seem to be to have been working with it in it's pure form on a daily basis for a number of years- i.e. miners and insulation guys. Not sure that I've even heard of brake mechanics having an elevated rate of cancer caused by asbestos, lots of info discussing the risks but few actual studies supporting them.

I just finished the tub last night. The thin layers I scraped but anything over an 1/8" wouldn't budge, I ended up using liquid nitrogen and froze it. It worked really well, it just peeled up in 6-8" pieces with minimal scraping.[IMG]
