Anyway to use IH Scout PowerLok in Jeep axles?

    Hello,

I have a chance to pick up both axles out of a IH Scout 800. The axles are complete and are a Dana 30 and a Dana 44 and both have factory PowerLok differentials and many new parts installed. My '66 Jeep is stock with Dana 27 and a Dana 44 axles. I thought about installing both axles in my Jeep but I found that the IH use centered differentials and the ones in the Jeep are offset so that's out without doing major surgery. Now I'm wondering if the PowerLoks can be installed in my D44 and another D30 and that D30 installed in the Jeep. I did some checking and the IH uses 30 tooth splines in the D44 and my Jeep uses 19 tooth. So the next question is can the mating spline in the differential be swapped for a 19 tooth part? Or should I try and find a later Jeep D44 with 30 tooth splines and install it in my Jeep and then see about installing the PowerLok? Or should I just give up this nonsense!?

    Joe,
I think that will work, swapping the 19 spline side gears for the 30 spline side gears. In fact, I have a set of 19 spline and I'm looking for 30 spline. Joe, what axle ratio do you have in your D44?
PM me back so I don't get in trouble with the moderators for making parts for sale offers on this forum.

You can swap the 19 spline and 30 spline side gears between the Dana 44 powerlock cases no problem. You can't do that with open cases however.
If that scout Dana 30 is open knuckle then the 30 Powerlock will fit in the Jeep 30 as long as gear ratios match. If its closed knuckle (I don't think they used closed knuckle 30's in Scouts) then you need to check the spline count.
The ratio range for a 30 is 3.73 to 5.38 for one case and 3.54 to 2.73 for another case.

    Nick,

Believe me I've considered putting that D 30 into my CJ5 but I think it has a centered differential and mine uses off set diffys so it sounds like no can do. :-( At least with out major surgery.

The D30 Front from a Scout 800 should be a close match for the jeep setups (if I remember right). The Scout 80 and IIs I have are the P side drop. I also remember the D30 on a Scout 800 I looked at being a P side with a D20 Tcase. Only the rear was centered.

What Chuck said. All Scout fronts were passenger side pumpkin. There are knuckle and brake differences however.

Isn't there a difference on the caster angle on the Scout axles?

I know the Scout 2's were either zero or 1* depending on year. Not sure on the 800's and 80's. Another good point to consider.

You can always try to get a hold of the TC (probably a D20) from the scout and put all the scout stuff in your CJ. Your axles are from a 1969 or later 800. The '68 and older used the D18 TC and the passenger side offsets to both axles.
