I am curious how much space you have between the front driveshaft and the tranny pan bolts right above it? (Specifically the very front one.) I am starting to wonder if I have enough room there on my CJ.

Well I don't know if this will help or not but I have a TH-400 and D-20 behind my 225 :v6: . Things seem to work very well, the rear drive shaft is mighty short though.

Yeah and a front driveshaft thats 14 miles long huh? You did give me an idea though, I may consider putting a carrier-bearing setup on my front driveshaft. I looked at it and if I move the front axle up to the bumpstop the driveshaft will hit the tranny pan bolts. But how often will I actually have that front tire move 6 inches upward.. jumping maybe, and during flex it wont do that high.

mnbubba, how long is your rear driveshaft? Mine measures 12" in the middle of the slip yokes travel. Did ou move the engine forward to fit it? I couldnt because my fan is an inch from the radiator as it is with the smallblock in it.

Carrier bearing for additional support? I can't imagine that the front driveshaft would be so long that it would need it...not when you think about how long d/s are in other vehicles without them. I'm not planning anything like that on SSDutch CJ6 / 700R4 combo....

Sounds like some longer bumpstops are in order up front though.

I will measure tonight when I get home. This was all done by the PO. The engine seems to be sitting in the original motor mounts, but the radiator had been moved a little bit forward. I have since moved it even further forward. I have a one piece fiberglass front clip with a metal grill. I did a little creative grinding on the grill and pushed my headlights out about an inch to give me a little more clearance, the CJ is a little bug eyed but it matches me on off camber spots  . I have been kicking around the idea of getting some later CJ-5 fenders and doing a little cutting, and a later CJ-5 hood (since they are both longer) and putting them on instead of the one piece clip, then I could move the radiator a little more and install a second tranny cooler. That TH-400 can get mighty warm. Either that or I am going to put a small fan in the floor and use that heat to warm the interior ;) .

As for the tranny pan bolts. The ones by the drive shaft were a little tough to get to but when ever you do something on a CJ isn't there one or two bolts that are tough to get to. The hardest one of all was the one right above the drain plug, which on my pan is on the side instead of the bottom.

I would need it for additional clearance, not for support. My front driveshaft was lengthened 9 inches when I had it built, but since I have been looking at it recently it looks like it might not clear the trany pan on full stuff. I dont really want to put 3 inch spacers in the stops, articulation is at a premium and that would kill it.

The Commandos used a carrier bearing with the TH400 in them, thats actually what I'll be looking for.

Hi Josh here- 1968 CJ5 225 V6, TH400? Dana 20, Dana 27+Dana 44- (Stock I think).Yeah my rear driveshaft is really short too. The front driveshaft is really long, like 35 inches. It looked like someone had put some sort of carrier bearing on it. The bearing was shot and I couldn't find a similiar one anywhere. I took the drive shaft, sectioned it , rewelded it and it seems to be working ok without the carrier. However if anyone know where I could get one let me know in case I need one.

    Thanks,
    Josh
PS Does anyone know why when I shift into Drive, my Jeep lurches forward no matter how hard I push on the brakes. If I turn down the idle it just stalls.

sounds like the stall speed on the converter is too low...
