finally got the carb rebuilt and put back on after last weeks little fire... now out of nowhere it's leaking oil like crazy.
I let 'er run for a good 15-20 minutes after i got the carb back on, fine tuning it, etc.
Naturally i was paying attention to the carb and didnt notice the oil puddle that was accumulating under the bellhousing... dripping about once per second from the little hole at the bottom/front of the bellhousing on the T-90. didn't look thick enough to be gear oil and no obvious seepage from the oil pan gasket. Any ideas as to where this is leaking from?

I'm gonna have to pull the durn engine arent i?

Rear main is possible, mine's apart right now and it leaks from the front (filled it with oil so it won't rust) so it may be possibly that?
I know when I drained my tranny it was like a clear, minor oil, then a sludge. Possibly since it was spinning, it "pureed" it and that's what you're seeing?

Maybe your oil pressure line is leaking? Its on the driver bottom of the block, when its disconnected boy oh boy it leaks bad. Check that

Yep. The good news is that you can replace it in the Jeep. Drop the pan and invest in a rear seal puller / installer. They can be a bugger to get out, but that is the only way to really fix it right. :(

Oh yeah I have the same problem. Supposedly the PO already replaced the rear main seal. I was hoping my trans rebuild would fix it but looks like me and you got the same problem for sure.

thanks Donnie, that makes it all better R)

so now i guess the question is... yank the L134 and fix the seal OR proceed with V8 swap ahead of schedule? ;)

Happened to me but it was the T-90 leaking bad after I shut it off -- Huh you say? Have a helper watch the leak with the clutch pushed in. watch it for a few minutes. You can't check idling in neutral because the input shaft still spins.

Don't ask me what the physics of this was but a trans seal kit cured it.... along with the trans rebuild because so much else was bad - like chipped gear teeth :smash:

good point... my trans has needed a rebuild since i've had the jeep (typical pops out of second problem). I guess either solution is going to require engine and/or tranny removal :(

    oh well

You don't have to pull the engine to change out the rear main seal! You will have to drop the pan and remove the rear main cap, and you will have to get the special tools to pull/replace the upper half of the seal. Getting the old seal out can try one's patience, but it sure beats the heck out of pulling the engine!

I bet a 283 Chebby would snug in there nice. It also happens to bolt straight up to an SM465.

Is it possible that the valve cover or something else up top might be leaking and running down the back of the motor?

I normally start from the top and work my way down in search of oil leaks rather than the reverse - which defies gravity.

i dont think the valve cover would leak that fast, but anything's possible i suppose... i've looked everywhere and the leak doesnt seem to be coming from any "visible" areas

    (not relevant)

I thought this was an L-head? No valve cover on an L-head.

Not to sound old, did you check for a break in the oil pressure line? Enough to drip but not enough to seem like it lost oil pressure?

Yeah, there is. It's just on the side of the engine under the intake and exhaust manifolds, instead of on the top. F-head has both (ain't I lucky to have more places to leak from than you do?)R):hurrican:

Rear main, oil pan gasket, side cover gasket, oil pressure fittings? Did I miss something?:?
