Over the last few months I've been battling a knock sound that I felt through the steering column. It didn't take long to find, it was the driver's side exhaust manifold tapping the top of the Ross steering box.

I replaced both motor mounts under the engine, but the problem was still there. The mounts where not that bad anyway.

Then I remembered the transmission mount. I ordered a new one from kaiser-willy. It is an omix part made in India which means it is probably from Mahindra. Looking at the profile my old mount was shot!

Installed the mount, the exhaust has about 1/2" more clearance above the ross box. Problem solved. The new mount looks much better. It has also reduced the engine shaking quite a bit too.

    Thanks for reading!

I hope you have better luck with your new mount than I did. A friend had a similar problem, and I installed a mount he supplied. All was good for about 3 months, then the knocking/tapping was back. He called me back to see if I could find the source of the noise. It didn't take long- the "new" mount was torn and collapsed, again. I asked where he got the mount, as he originally told me this was an OEM part. As it turned out, it was "Rugged Ridge" and I told him that was Omix. The same wrapper you show. I told him to source an old-stock mount from one of the military suppliers, which he did. It had a 1953 date on the wrapper and he was concernered it was too old to use. Almost a year later, its still like new.

I bought some mounts from Rockauto on sale for like 12 bucks or something. The showed up and were of Indian manufacture. So far they are still good. Time will tell.

I was hoping Homersdog's solution to a vibrating steering column would solve my identical problem occurring while at stop lights. My CJ5 F4 steering wheel rumbles and shakes, creaking the dashboard until I accelerate again. I put in new engine mounts last Fall and the engine is rock solid as watch it idle.

My exhaust configuration places it inches away from Ross box and other steering components, so it's not an issue causing vibration, it seems. Also, I don't understand any connection between a transmission mount and steering column, which are quite far apart. My transmission mount is original. It looks solid, but hard. I have a new one for replacement, but after the nightmarish experience of raising my engine to insert new engine mounts, I'm reluctant to attempt replacing T-mount. In any case, I don't see any relationship between transmission and vibrating steering column.

Any suggestions or help for me anyone?

The transmission mount also supports the engine. The engine/tranny/transfer case have to be supported in a plane. It takes 3 points to define a plane, the tranny mount is the third point.

I am not that familiar with the 4 cylinder to know if it can bump the Ross box or not, but in my case it was the v6 which is a tight squeeze in the engine compartment. When the transmission mount wore out it allowed the exhaust manifold to drop low enough to touch the steering box.

I had the same issues. I replaced my mounts and the cloth under the support attaching the column to the dash mine was webbing. Tranny mounts and t-case were easier then engine for me. Hope this helps.
