I'm not entirely sure what i'm dealing with here. Before I rebuilt the carb I found a vacuum leak at the base of the carb as it was missing a bottom plate/gasket. With that fixed I get no RPM increases when I spray carb fluid around the base anymore. However, if I cover the top of the carb with my hand while its running RPM's go up (is that clearly a vacuum issue elsewhere if its sucking air in?) or is it another issue altogether?

I've tried spraying the fluid around the engine but not getting any noticeable rpm changes like I noticed with the missing base plate before. Not sure what to do next, any advice?

    Thanks in advance.

You need to set the base idle screw to 1 1/2 turns. Set the timing to spec. Adjust the idle mixture screws. By placing your hand over the air horn and an increase in rpm tells me it's lean. Vacuum leak is possible, I reset all pertinent adjustments then go hunting. Ron

Hi - First, you're in the wrong forum. This forum is for '71 and earlier. Second, you mash up Prestolite and Motorcraft. The 2V carb for a '77 is made by Motorcraft. Prestolite is for the ignition system. The idle should be set to "best lean idle." Keep the idle screws at the same number of turns. Turn them in together until the engine starts to stumble, then out a 1/4 turn. Best lean idle.

I'd look for other sources of idle air bypass, like missing hoses on vacuum fittings.

It would help to put the year/equipment in your signature file, so it appears with every post.
