I am putting the front components (power steering pump, alternator, pulleys, belts, etc.) back onto my rebuilt AMC 304 for my 79 CJ5. I have been searching the web for a detailed diagram of where brackets, spacers, nuts, bolts, and washers go, but haven't found anything aside from some VERY basic diagrams of how the belts go through the pulleys. I have tried to use photos of AMC 304s but none of them show the area that I need help with (below the power steering pump, behind the fan). I also have 3 different shop manuals and none of them show these little details. I just want to make sure I put every bolt and bracket back in the right place. Looking back, I'm kicking myself for not taking detailed photos of all the brackets and spacers on the front of the engine before I disassembled. Anyone know of a good detailed diagram of the front of the engine? Thanks very much.

There may be an exploded drawing in the Jeep parts manual from that era. If someone has it and can post it for you ... otherwise you can buy repops of the parts manual.

My '75 may be the same - tell me specifically what you are looking for, and I can post a pic or two.

Thank you. Specifically, I am looking for a detailed exploded view of the alternator mounting assembly. We have the power steering pump and mounting assembly figured out, the harmonic balancer, main pulley, timing cover/water pump and pulley, and the fan figured out, but the alternator, a few mounting brackets, and about 4 different spacers and various bolts/nuts are lying there looking me. We could probably guess our way through it, but it would sure save us time and headaches if we could study a detailed diagram. Thanks again.

Here is a picture of what I have left to go on the front of the engine. The alternator, 3 or 4 brackets, and 6 spacers. They may not all go together, but I think most of these parts are related. Also, the other picture is of an unidentified part. What is it and where does it go? To me, it looks exactly like the barrel shroud on the end of a 1911 .45 auto! Any help would be great. Thanks.

Mmm. My '75 will be different since it has a Motorola alternator, not Delco like yours. I'll take a look at it when I get home and see if it's similar.

I had the same problem when reinstalling my 304 this summer. I won't the jeep back for another week or two, but if you need help after that, PM me and I will take some pictures and send them to you. Meanwhile, you could try looking at a 1980 era Jeep Wagoneer with a 360 and get some ideas or search the web for on board air and there's pictures of how to mount your air
compressor upright. hope this helps. Sorry I couldn't get you pictures right away but the jeep is being worked on 6 hours away. Doc

Thanks very much, everyone. This is such a great forum. Anytime I need advice or information, everybody is happy to chip-in. I just wish I could provide more help for others, but my mechanical knowledge and experience is coming along slowly. Thank you "jpflat2a" for posting those diagrams. That is exactly what I needed. I'll be sure to post pics in the "builds" forum when this rebuild wraps up in a few weeks. Thanks again!:)

your 1911 .45 is for the oil filter ti holds the by-pass spring and pad in place and the ring is held in place by the threaded adapter that the oil filter spins on too

I have had same problem for about 3 months. I have posted on my desktop as many pic as possible from any site the alt hook up and brackets. This is the break threw that I needed.
The cj that I needed this for is a 80 cj5 with a 304 now that had a poor placed 360 in it. The 304 is from a 72 cj5 that was crazy to wild. The 360 that was in the cj5 jumped time and the transmission broke. We rebuilt the t176 trans and are going to install the 304 but have had a terible time trying to find out how to hook up the newer alt. The old alt was working but had sparks flying around in it. When I say we I am talking about me and my son 17 year old new CJ fan. His main ride is a 83 CJ 8 Scramble thats prefect. He has lots or respect for it. He's got lots of freinds that he is turning it to jeep fans. We have 6 jeeps at this time. Thanks again and Jeep on.
