In my CJ-5 I have a chevy alternator (3 wire). I have an idiot light and a volt gauge on the dash. Problem is that after starting, I have to give it a little extra gas to get the alternator to start charging. The light then goes out, and the voltage goes up to around 13.8. Is this just a sign of a weak alternator?

most Chevy alts i have run did the same thing... i would not worry about it..
you could try to tighten the belt a little see if that helps.....
but as long as it kicks in and is putting out around 14v it should be fine

don't have the details in front of me, but yes that is normal. the alternator has to feel a load to start working and there are two ways to do it, install a light in line with the exciter or rev the engine on start. IIRC
