Mine is just an "L" bracket mounted to those two bosses just over the oil pan in the bottom pic. I have another I want to mount high on the passenger side, waiting for it to cool down.

Hey that looks a lot like my motor. Is it perhaps a 232 not the 258?

Here are pics of my alt bracket 1973/74 232:

And you can see the bottom mount here:

Nope it's the 258. At least according to the 73 technical service manual any way. The stamped # matches up to what they say. I also have a running 74 and my mounting bracket looks just like yours but now I need to get this running to keep building.:)

Thanks! its Plasti-kote Engine Enamel. #225 Alpine Green. I liked Plasti-kote the best and it is the closest color I could find to AMC Green. I also base coated it with the Plasti-kote primer.

The 232 and 258 will be the same externally, for the same year engine. They only differ in crankshaft stroke.

    Incorrect.

The 258 was introduced in mid-year 1970. The 232 and 258 were available in the CJ from 1972 through 1978 or 1979, when the 232 was discontinued. There was never a period when only the 232 was available in CJs.

This shows the difference between the '74 and earlier drivers side mount that uses the small/weak/expensive motorola alternator and the 75 and later passenger side mount that uses the Delco Remy alternator that you can find anywhere for cheap.

which way you want to go?
Do you want to stay original with the low, drivers side mount with the odd, external regulated motorola?
Or do you want to upgrade to the high, passenger side mount that takes the common GM internally regulated alternator?

Now would be the time to upgrade with the engine all exposed like that

Since your engine seems to be missing a lot of stuff, I'd look around for a donor engine that can give you all the doodads for the front of the engine. Ideally I'd look for a later engine that has power steering and even air conditioning. 258s with air conditioning are quite scarce, and if you find one with the brackets...

Also, I'd take everything from the front of the donor. This stuff does not mix and match well at all.

Well actually this is the donor. The rest or most of the parts are laying in the garage. I have a working Delco-Remeny internal regulator that I am trying to put back on!! So I’m impartial on lower left or upper right. :) On the plus side I did get her to fire up today for the first time in 2-3 years!!:beer:

If you want to run the delco, you will probably need to go with the passenger side mount.

The early motorola mount is smaller from the pivot bolt to the adjuster bolt(6 1/2 vs 6 3/4) and the delco fan hits the mount . The motorola's pivot is thinner(1" vs 2") too.
