I'm thinking about putting a small hole in the top of my air horn for the few occasions that I need to spray starting fluid in the carb. My M38A1 has an enclosed oil bath air filter system that isn't convenient as for as taking the air horn on and off. Obviously the open hole will defeat the purpose of the air filter. I want to put a small screw to close it. The air horn metal is too thin to thread. So there are 3 options:

    1. Have a small nut tacked on to the top of the air horn and then drill the hole threw the nut..
    2. Drill a small pilot hole and screw a self-tapping screw in.
    3. Forget about it and live with the inconvenience.

As for #1, I can either use JB Weld or have it welded. I don't have a welder so I'd have to bother someone. Is the metal to thin so it would burn through?

As for #2, I don't know if it'll stay tight enough with out any threading. Any thoughts?

As for #3, the air horn is originally for a carter carb. I now have a solex. While the air horn fits, it's tedious to reset it when it's been taken off. Also, the air horn is connected to the air filter with a air intake pipe in between that lets air flow to the distributor. Removing the hose off of the air horn inlet involves some twisting to coax it back on and often end up knocking it loose from the carb. This is my motivation.

    What say ye?

Well, maybe because that would be too easy? Why didn't I think of that?

    Thanks!

Hey Don, can you measure the outside diameter and the inside diameter of the end where the hose connects? I would greatly appreciate it.

Is there a vacuum port with a rubber hose connected to the intake somewhere? Maybe the vacuum wipers? Just spray into the vacuum port on the intake.

Dry bowl? An electric helper fuel pump would be another solution.

M38A1 fuel pump has a manual priming lever on it.
