Last night I finally got the Jeep dusted off, and gathered the rest of the body parts that need to be finished & painted to get the flattie on the road. A couple of nice days should be all I need to get he front clip and the windshield frame painted.

Now this morning I'm sitting here in my cube at werk with a :coffee: in front of me, and lightning just hit my brain; How about rigging up some sort of air cylinder arrangement for the hood? Has anyone messed with something like this?

I was thinking to maybe put 1-2 of the lighter-weight cylinders on the underside of the hood to let it hold the hood up once the catches are undone. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether the hood will take the stress of the mounting hardware without bending the hood.

    Ideas?

Sounds feasible. Do you have the hood blocks towards the front of the hood for the windshield to lay on? You could maybe use that mounting area for support. Trick would be mounting them so they'd compress fully when the hood's down and be long enough with the hood up.

Use the outer edges of the hood for mounts to mimic the action of lifting the hood with your hands. The stress picture won't change from manual hoisting, and it will take less effort. Given the length of most of the cylinders, you can connect the hood side first and then mockup the inside attaching points using C clamps or some other temporary means of support until you get it right. Then all you have to do is mark the spot and go about cutting and fitting.

Hood lift cylinders are available for the CJ's. Thought I saw them in Four Wheel Parts Wholesale catalog.
