So i've been digging through my jeep manual and the threads, but haven't had much luck. I have a 67 CJ5 with a F134. I opened up the Oil Bath Air Cleaner and found that there appears to be no filter element inside. Is this an element that can be replaced or would it have been built in to the body of the Air Cleaner? Any help would be appreciated.

There is supposed to be a wire mesh in there which is not meant to be removable.

Also it appears the cup at the bottom is missing?

I have the bottom cup. It was removed for the picture.

So it sounds like I'll need to replace the entire assembly then...:(

Cool! I was asking since the firewall picture didn't show it. :)

After a bit if research I'm wondering if I'd be better of replacing it with a paper filter on the carb or modifying the current set up per CJ3B.info

    Air Filter Replacement at CJ3B.info

I found a replacement on the Willy's Parts website, but I can't bring myself to drop $250 on a used one.

I like that modification, and since yours is already butchered I'd say go for it. The design of the housing and the turbulence of the air path is how it works. The oil catches particles that are heavier than the air molecules and are slung off as the air makes a 180 degree turn. It's actually very efficient.

It looks like someone was planning on a modern filter in the oil bath air cleaner. I would look at K and N elements and see what you can make work, someone already started on it. MY Jeep had a dirt bike air filter welded to the oil bath horn when I got it, I was able to find a K and N element that fit right in it.

FWIW, I tried the paper element route, and my jeep didn't like it nearly as much as the oil. I saved the wire mesh and put it back in and returned it to stock. It made it run too lean.

I did too, I had the clamps and small parts chromed and painted it black and put it back on so it looks right. I put the small dirt bike one on my Garage Art Motor. Good luck

I don't know how much mesh is needed for the early CJ. I am still building my 74 CJ6. My Harley Panhead breaths better with copper mesh filter. On ebay you can buy 2 rolls of mesh that are app 60" long and 2" wide. This is enough for 6" dia. air cleaners. I wrapped it my self and used big brass packing staples from cardboard boxes to hold it together.

For less than $20 you can buy some mesh on ebay. copper mesh filter.jpg
