I found this 74 cj 5 close to home, no motor or title with a OBO price. Now, I'm thinking I'd get the d30/d44 and a Saginaw steering box, though it's probably non power and I'd like PS. . I also found a 71 Jeepster being parted out with PS. In 71 the steering box was Saginaw wasn't it? Any thoughts on what the cj's worth?

I don't have pics but can supply a link to the ad tonight from home. It's on Facebook marketplace, Lancaster, Oh. I'm at work and can't acces FB from here. I'm mostly interested in the axles. From what I've read on other posts, most of the Cj parts fit on a JC with little or no mods.

If the axles are in good shape maybe a couple of hundred or less for it, the gear ratio's are likely 3:73's. Look for a factory tag or better yet, pull the covers and inspect the gears...maybe you will find a Power Lok limited slip in there.
The 71 J/C had Saginaw steering from the factory. Make sure the pump and mounting bracket are still with it...those can be difficult and/or expensive when you don't have them and need them.

The 71 JC with the saginaw is steering box only, it's on a parts JC with no motor. I'd guess the pump and brackets went with the motor.

So if you have an old Jeep with the old drum brakes this is a great upgrade (especially if there is some kind of traction devise). Front D30 in decent condition would be worth $300 or more (to me) . Rear axle from 71 is different from all the older D44 I believe and more desirable (flanged axle shafts vs tapered?)

Rear 15gal fuel tank is really nice to have also if its there in good condition.

The PS box is on a 71 JC being parted out. The d30/d44 are both on a 74 Cj5 with no motor. 2 different vehicles in 2 different locations. I know the 74 needs to be looked at before I jump. Too much rust or abuse kills it before I start.

That's not a 74. Short fenders, underseat tank, and what *looks* like a tapered rear axle put it at 69 or earlier. If it's the original windshield, it's likely a 69.

Which means you really don't want those axles. Dana 27 front and tapered offset Dana 44 rear.

Wow, that's good. I'm very green. I never caught any of that till you pointed it out. Thanks! They's asking $600 OBO but they won't get back to me. Not what I need. Thanks again.

I tried to call this guy like he asked in the ad but the ad is messed up and won't give me the number. I emailed him but doubt he'll respond. I'll try him again later. It might be a quirk in they're software. Thanks

I've also located a guy in Moundsville, WV, which isn't too far from me, who is parting his trail rig. It has a D44 front and an 8.8, both with lockers and disc brakes for $1000. I know that this a wider set up but the cheap skate in me keeps putting in his 2 cents. Would that be way to wide? I'm trying to not get ahead of myself on this as I've got plenty of time to locate something but it's hard to do.

OK, things are looking up. I located and bought a pair of 73-75 Cj axles from a Jeep yard in Salem, OH. (Daveys Jeeps) That's close enough as my youngest daughter lives in Canton. Super clean, D44/D30, 3.73 gears, on a skid, ready to PU for $500. I'm a happy boy. He also had a complete PS set up for a TJ for $200. I bought that too. I appreciate all the help and insight on this forum. I seem to get a lot more help on this ECJ5 site than any place else I tried. Thanks again but don't think you're rid of me. I'll be back :bananatool:
