Adding Gear Oil Made Easy

    ...But still messy.

    I really hate adding gear oil to the transfer case. It's such a messy ordeal pumping gear oil into the case. So today I thought, what if I made an access hole through the bottom of the passenger side tool box? When I opened up the toolbox there was already a hole. I fished my funnel's tube through, lo and behold there's a hole in the frame for it to line up into the filler hole perfectly. Was this on purpose? The funnel has a twist to open/close drain spout for stopping when full. I zip tied the handle to the passenger seat bar and watched below until the gear oil trickled out. Since the oil is so thick, it wasn't a quick process, but it beat laying under the Jeep pumping gear oil out of a jug.

    but how are you in two places at once :confused:
    1- adding oil

    Drain remaining oil that's stuck in the tube back into the jug.

    The problem i have with this method is to 50 pounds of crap i have crammed in the toolbox...tool kit, tire plugs, 2 snatch blocks, a come-along, ratchet straps, lug wrench, winch controller etc etc etc...by the time i empty out and then replace all that stuff i haven't saved any time.

    On 4spds I take the shifter cane out to add gear oil. on the 3spds Iv'e drilled and taped the top cover for a pipe plug so you only have to take the small trany cover off.

    Ok, I started using a cheap plastic weed sprayer, about two gallon, with the spray nozzle cut off. Pump right into all the gear cases. And when that spankin' new long block is still on the stand you clamp the hose on a fitting in an oil passage, pour in some motor oil, pump it up and pre-lube the engine, so you can watch to make sure the oil is getting everywhere it should.

    As much as I admire your ingenuity... IMO punching holes in the body is a high price for a bit of occasional convenience. The weed sprayer is a better idea. JMO. Or dump oil in the top. Easy.

    There's a drain hole in the toolbox....although mine doesn't have the corresponding hole in the frame that Focker mentioned. The 2 frame holes pictured are too small to be useful.

    I've had mixed luck with these. Quit using them many years ago.

    The heavy gear oil was tough to move and the inside piston would suck air, or pass oil, depending on which way I was going with it. Pre-warming the oil helped, but is a pain.

    Maybe mine were low quality, YMMV.

    These days I use the plastic pumps that screw onto the oil jug. Pay no attention to the name on it...

    I used a pretty small diameter tube. The picture of your frame hole looks about the same as mine. The small tube didn make the process longer. I wouldn't have a problem making that frame hole a little larger in order to use a larger tube. I do like the weed spray er idea...I'm not sure I'd go through the trouble of modifying it.

    It just depends on what you are working with.
    People hack up the bed for a fuel pump. So what's a round hole with a plug at your feet.
    I did this in 2005 when the front output seal went out and it was a run down plow jeep.
    My floor boards are road signs and I don't have a toolbox so mitigating any further mechanical issues was a priority.
    I'm also a big proponent that it won't get checked if you have to roll in the snow, mud, or rocks to do so.
