Nothing in the jeep. Have a small one on the wood hauler (firewood cuting requirement).
Calling 911 on the cell will not work. I go where there is no signal....
Besides what are the odds of this happening anyway?
I know, I will get one in there....... for the other guy on the trail who wrapped his battery cable around the header!

I carry a 5# ABC refillable. It is mounted on the roll bar behind the driver's seat.
I'll have to consider a new location. Thanks for the info Steve!

The dry chemical fire extiguishers are the only way to fly - I had a gasoline fired plumber's furnace catch on fire once (leaky pump), and wanted (Needed!) to get it out before it became a gas fired grenade. It was out the cement outside the shop, and I only had a 2 lb unit - one short burst and the fire was out, almost like magic. Yeah, there was some white powder about, but there was also no explosion, and nothing was damaged.

While this wasn't a jeep fire, the fuel is the same, and it made me a believer-

steve that makes alot of sence. the only reason im puting in the CO2 setup is to make it so i/other people have a longer time to get the real fire extingisher to keep the fire out.

;) I was all set to cut/paste/upload when I read you beat me to it...
I'll re-evaluate mounting positions when the rollcage is built for SSDutch, but I'm not sure there's really a better spot than on the bar behind the seat. Anywhere forward of that puts it in knee-knocking or kid-trampling range.

I do need a nicer mount though - just zip-tying the plastic bracket to the rollbar worked but looked like heck.

P.S. In case you were wondering:

Class-A = Ordinary combustible material. Wood, paper, textiles and the like.

Class-B = Flammable liquids. Gasoline, Kerosene, Oils, etc.

    Class-C = Energized Electrical Equipment

there is also a class -D = self oxidizing fire ( this is anything that can feed itself oxygen ie: magnesium, otto fuel, aluminum w/ iron, rocket fuel, etc ) sorry, but any of you navy guys out there will know what im talking about. this stuff is our worst nightmare a submarine

So what you're saying is a 5# ABC extinguisher is OK as long as we're wheeling with at least 3 others with 5# extinguishers :D

I have a 5# ABC on the rollbar in my TJ.

    Thanks for the info.!

I carry a 5# BC in the truck. I also have a tiny Halon extinguisher that came from my Mom's car. Halon is cool because it evaporates and leaves no residue. I thought that halon was the premier type of extinguisher, but when I tried to buy one, I found that they are very expensive. Halon is a fluorocarbon, and not ozone-layer friendly. Apparently small plane pilots still carry halon extinguishers, but the halon is recycled from larger decommisioned extinguishing systems.

I keep a 3# right behind the pass seat mounted to the wheel house. It is an easy reach for me. For mounting, I cut a 5" chrome exhaust from a semi about 8" long and bolted it to the wheel house. Works good for me, but I have only run on paved race tracks. No need to worry about the rollover that the rest of you may worry about by running the trails, etc.
    I wouldn't be without one!

I have one in each of our Jeeps (3) easy to reach, and 1 in the truck behind the seat. Dry chem all.
Eric I loathe "D" fires. VW case go poof.
Saw 1 "Delta" the whole time I was in the Navy.
Also a 20#er in the shop.

5# strapped to the rollbar, behind the driver. How much you can accomplish with an extinguisher depends on how well you know how to use it. I highly recomend taking an extinguisher class. I used to teach these classes for the town employees. Most of them learned a thing or two and were very appreciative of the class.

On a side note. Most Class D extinguishers are pretty much worthless and a better method is to use multiple 2.5" lines, putting out 250 GPM+, each. If you use enough water at once, it won't explode. Better get it right the first time, though.

Steve: Great info. I've got a little 2lb dry chemical that came with my Jeep from the PO mounted in front of the pass. seat (got no idea how old it is). Also got a Halon "2" (enviro friendly) 3 lb mounted in it (made by Amerex). I put that in my Yukon when driving I 40 (Route 66). I've seen 2 Cherokee's burning on the side of the Hwy. .

For working on cars at the house, I prefer my 5 lb CO2. I put it beside me, pull the pin to be ready. Had to use it 3 times on carb work. Engine was not hot so it worked fine and No Mess. :) Also have a 10 lb dry chemical in the garage just in case. Also used the CO2, as Mcruff may know, to put out a small fire on my lathe when cutting AL. Can't use a powder on that, unless you want a huge mess.

BTW, what do you think of the "Cold Fire" stuff? Nascar uses it in the pits.
