AA Clutch Cable conversion to Chain

    Hi All,

    Just looking for the Advanced Adapters part number to convert from the clutch cable to chain?

    Also anyone running this set up? Good or bad?

    I like mine Jeff.
    On a '71, the pedal pivot shaft may not have the "ear" on the shaft where you mount one end of the chain; my '71 didn't. I ordered a new pivot shaft and bracket from Walck's, it comes with the required "ear".

    P/N is 716640 (or it was when I bought mine some years ago). You'll note it says for 1946-1970 Jeeps... that's because the '71s didn't have the ear. Replace the pedal pivot shaft with one that has the ear and it works just fine with the '71.

    I ran one for years when I had a manual tranny. I got mine used, but they are worth every penny.

    Clutch chain

    Thanks for all of the input. It's good to hear that the chain set up works more smoothly than the cable. Makes for a very long day of wheelin with the present set up.
    Anyone try fabricating their own set up?

    Thanks James,

    I'll check it out. It looks like the clutch fork side is still a cable? Is it weak there? Anyone consider using a straight threaded piece there instead? Does the cable on the end have to be able to bend?

    Yup. It is still a cable. It's not really "weak" or anything, it just compensates for any missalignment or twisting. That's why no one has replaced it with a solid rod or connection. I've never heard of a AA cable end brakeing or anything. These have been used for years with great success.

    The cable is short, about 8" long, and is easily twice the diameter of the original cable. You can buy an extra cable piece to keep as a spare, but you'll probably never need it (yeah, I bought a spare, because I had the same worries from previous cable experience. I doubt I'll ever need it)

    Be aware, when you first install it you may find it grabs VERY quickly (read: Launch!!)
    until the clutch wear pattern changes, and you re-train your clutch leg ;)

    I fabbed my own clutch linkage. I had a HD cable made up at Clutch & Trans Co. It hooks up on the outside of the frame with a bracket 6 in. away from the clutch pedal pivot. I drilled a hole 3in. up from the pivot on the clutch pedal and pinned it there and then ran the cable above the frame and made a bracket off of the transfer case to mount the end of the cable. I then used the adjuster end from the stock cable (5/16 fine thread) to hook to the clutch fork. It works great and I never have a problem with pedal bind or adj. when I twist it around on the trail.

    Hi All,

    Thanks for the info but my neighbor and I decided to try something different. We used a cable and 2 pulleys. One mounted rearward of the clutch rod and one on the opposite side of the frame from the first. We then ran the cable from the clutch rod to the 1st pulley, thru the frame, around the 2nd pulley and to the clutch fork. It used to be so bad I could hardly push the clutch in, I can now do it with my hand. What a difference!

    I just got a digital camera on Friday. I will try to get some pics here either tomorrow or Weds. I have been storing the Jeep at my Dad's house while doing the SM 465 conversion and it will be back on Weds.

    Oh yeah while I am at it I will try to get some pics of the new disc parking brake set up too! I replaced the drum brake with the Wildwood disc.

    Nice job on the tranny cover! I'm going to show your pics to a buddy who just put an NP435 into his EB, your pics will give him some ideas!

    BTW, I'll be in San Jose mid to late July, maybe we can hook up? Know where the Faultline is?

    and i was proud of the install of my clutch gear...now youve got cables and they are better? man..put my work to shame why dontcha... =)
    the only prollem i have with my clutch is when i bottom out on sand or something and i hit the clutch, the ground will hold the clutch engaged...kinda sucked when wheeling on a sandy hill and got stuck due to clutch (i was REALLY high centered)..rofl.

    but i must say, before i got it installed my clutch rod came off atleast 2 times while playing on rocks and rocky-dirt type hills so i am 250% happier with this setup.
