Hello, I thought I'd take another look at power steering on my GF's cj. Before I was looking at swapping to a '76 and later set up where I'd have to change the manifold. I ended up not doing anything because that route was going to get expensive. So I thought I would look for brackets for mounting the pump on the pass. side of the 258. What would have come with mounts like that? I figure'72-'75 CJs, wagoneers of the same era? What about the pickups and AMC cars? Did they mount the power steering pumps on the passenger side too? Did they even come with 258s?
    Thanks,
    Joe

Pretty scarce. AFAIK the last year for the PS pump on the passenger side of the engine was 1974. Any 232-258 prior to that with PS should be that design. I would expect all AMC products from that era to have the same design. You'll need more than just the bracket - you need pulleys, water pump, likely other stuff.

One of our members built his own brackets for passenger side mounting - take a look in older posts.

If it were mine, I'd look for a later 258 donor and move all the related parts over. The DS mount makes a lot more sense. And I'd take the manifolds too. The way to keep it cheap is to find the parts - or a complete engine) from a private party. A junkyard will want to charge you for all the individual pieces, and that could get expensive.

Hmm, ok. At least I know what to look for. I found an '87 cherokee with a dana 44 in the junkyard the other day, so maybe my luck is good right now. ;)

r_unda those brackets turned out good! I had that same lock to lock issue on the last cj I put powersteering on (it was an easy one, a V8 ), it turned out I had the drag link set way long. Once I threaded everything in a bunch it was good.
    Thanks fellas

Hey all, I finally got enough of the parts together to start putting them on the Jeep. This is for mounting the pump on the passenger side. I started with mounting the water pump and crank pulleys. Right away I could see I had a problem. The water pump pulley sits out about a half an inch too far, and the crank pulley sits out away from the harmonic balancer maybe about a half an inch. I think these must be from a 76 or newer.
Does anybody have pictures of their pulley that they wouldn't mind posting? I've found pictures of everything else but the pulleys. Really I'm just curious if the crank pulleys are all butted up together, or spread out.

Thanks for the pics. The water pump pulley I have looks short, like the one in your picture. I went and measured a 75 and up water pump too. They are a bit longer than the older ones. Plus now I've seen pics of the newer harmonic balancer, it looks different than mine too. All adding up to....I don't have the right parts.
