doesn't the speedo cable go into the D20 transfer case?

oop nevermind, you have a d300. But still I would think the speedo read off of the t-case output.

Speedo hooks onto the output of the transfercase. There is a connection specifically for this Exception to this is the Ford 435 with stock Spicer model 21 single speed transfer case used in Ford trucks and Broncos.

Opps, yes I meant the tcase. My speedo cable dont plug into the transfer case input. I figured they would be the same considering that they are both Dana cases around the same era. Could it just be plugged up with crud maybe?

The stock NP 435 speedo cable goes into the adapter housing/output housing. Jeep speedo cables thread on to an output adapter. What cable are you trying to use? All Jeep transfer cases use the same threads on the speedo cable adapter from '42-'86. Dana 18 through Dana 300.
Not sure what combination of parts you are trying to use to have a problem here?
If you are trying to use the Ford speedo cable then that is the problem.

Im running my stock 1972 cj5 speedo cable and running it to a Dana 300 transfer case. My stock cable only plugs into the tcase output about 1/4 of the cable and not all the way down. So my question was this:
Will my '72 cj5 speedo cable plug into the dana 300 tcase? Ya'll answered that for me, thanks.
My speedo cable does not plug into the tcase output more than 1/4 inch which is not enough for the cj cable to screw onto the tcase output so is it possible that it has too much dirt and crud in the tcase speedo output to allow the cable to plug in? If it is possible, is it as easy as it looks by just unscrewing it from the tcase output housing and cleaning it up?

If you have the short output version of the 300 the housing will unthread just like a 20 or 18 transfer case. The driven gear can be then removed. It is common for the driven gear shaft to get full of crud where the speedo cable core goes in. Sometimes some spray brake cleaner can flush out the debris allowing the speedo cable to go in all the way. If you have the long output Dana 300 the housing will have a retainer and a bolt holding it in. Very obvious between the two. Same rules apply regarding the speedo cable fitting in the driven gear.

I beleive mine is the short output version. It looks to just have a flat nut holding the housing to the case. Thanks for the info Nick, I will check it out tomorrow and see if i cant get it stabbed in there.

Here are a coupld pics of the case.

You can sort of see the speed drive gear housing in this pic. I have the jeeps speedometer cable poked into the hole and just sitting there.
