Hi, I found a 231 out of a 86 regal for 250 the guy said the only reason he removed it was to put in a 350. other than the flywheel what more will be involved putting it in my 66 cj5 until i can rebuild my 225. speaking of flywheel will a 350 manual flywheel work on the 231 without balancing it i would like to keep the 225 flywheel for my rebuild. thanks ,ed

This should be a bolt in engine as far as bell housing and engine mounts are concerned. Even fire flywheels are near ubobtaniun I would suppose a good machine shop should be able to balance the 350 flywheel for your engine. Watch the tooth count to make sure it's compatible with your starter. There are a few variations.

If you rebalance your 225 flywheel to the 231, what will you do for a flywheel after the 225 is rebuilt?

I think thats why they're asking so he can still use it later.

If you plan to use the 225 later, i would think it would be easier to keep it as is and find a second one that you could keep with the 231 for future sale or jeep project

I have about 20 of them but shipping would be tough. I have seen an even fire flywheel listed on a couple performance websites but probably cheaper to balance an oddfire. I have had good luck just rolling the dice and bolting up oddfire flywheels onto even fire motors especially before the internet when you didn't know it might not work. There are no guarantees and you risk having to pull it back apart and then balancing it.

Curious..............why don't you just proceed with the rebuilding of the 225? 2-3 weeks even if you had to bore it and source parts............seems counter productive to go through the cost and trouble of sticking in the 231 for a short period of time.

I think the 231 vs the 225 clutch & pressure plate are different.......one is flat , the other raised.

I agree with Tarry on this, unless the 231 is already purchased, I'd put that $250 toward building the oddfire. I prefer the sound of the odd fire anyway, but, that's a personal preference.

Tarry is also correct about the differences in flywheels, odd fires have a raised lip around the perimeter of the clutch disc surface. I have a couple of spares myself, they can be shipped USPS in a flat rate box, insured for about $18 anywhere USPS has a Post Office.

Camaros are another source of inexpensive flywheels for even fire V6's. With my luck if I sent the flywheel out it would come back balanced incorrectly or be lost, and it would probably be cheaper to buy the correct flywheel to begin with, as termin8ed said.

Costs can vary widely on rebuilds, depending on what has to be done and who does it. If the shop does all the machine work, buys and assembles everything, you can expect to pay more. If the shop only does machine work, no assembly or parts chasing, costs are significantly lower. Rebuilds and parts kit sources have been discussed to death here, IIRC Kanter, AutoZone and Rock Auto, possibly NAPA will have parts or parts kits available. GoodLuck!
