I am trying to remove the axle shafts but got stuck. Trying to pull off the spindle then the axle should pull out. Someone repacked the locking hub recently. Grease was like new along with the bearing and seal. I am looking to upgrade the front bumper a little. Not much I can do. Gonna cut off the "Knee Cappers" and weld up a few holes in it. Might try to find two D Rings and weld them on.

Interesting adventure... You are soon able to manage a Jeep repair shop.
Good to be young and learn.

I don't know the origin of your Jeep, maybe she was in the sea or bad climate with a bad driver.

Now that you know, you can sell it and buy one in good conditions to make it totally new. And use it as a DD.

"pulling the engine for the fourth time" my boy you have a lot more patience than I for sure. Learning curve would be a good name for this jeep...

Viola, the axle shafts are out and the ring and carrier is out. Ring gear looks alright but is pitted from the water that was in there. The bearings fell apart, the seals are well gone. I really aught to pull it out and clean it thoroughly. Axle shafts are dirty but the splines look alright. There is more mud in this than there was in the frame.

Well I guess Farming Country will do this to a Jeep along with not being serviced,,,EVER! You know the factory engine pistons moved around in the cylinders just by barely pushing them. This Jeep was ridden hard I guess. Lucky that the transmission works still. I need to get the gas tank replaced though, the guy tried to epoxy it and it still has a wet residue around the epoxy and smells of gas. The gas tank skid plate is shot. At least the tub is in great shape. Underneath is pretty darn clean too.

Alan I doubt I'll ever have the money or complete knowledge of opening a Jeep Shop but thanks for the kind words. ;)
Walt I think that name could stick and I've had nothing but patience working on this Jeep. I get it one piece at a time,,,,

Works been slow lately because of the constant rain all last week and today. I think this week will be dry but I am getting swarmed by people needing stuff fixed so they can cut their grass.
Anyways the axle shafts are pretty rusted but I might try to just sand them off or electrolysis may do the job. The biggest problem I face is getting the axle tubes cleaned out. The grease remover only helped so much and there is a good film of rust and grease in them.
The brake rotors are trashed. I was going to cut the rotors but they were already too far gone. Warped and worn down badly.
The locking hubs are kinda rusted inside and are hard to turn. What is the quality of the Superwinch locking hubs? I assume factory, they are 5 bolt.
The spindles are in good condition and the bearings look good. Someone tore into the front before to repack the bearings and such recently I would think.

Small update, I got the front differential off yesterday and pressed the bearings off the carrier. Gonna need some new outer tie rods. Think I'll buy a master rebuild kit for the front and a few other small odds 'n ends.

Been alittle bit since I last had any update, My uncle and I went and picked up a 360 today. It looks to be all stock. I actually opened up the engine before buying and it was pretty clean. I need to buy a flywheel and sell the flexplate off of it and do something with the York 210 on it and the smog pump is not needed. I ordered a complete rebuild kit for the front differential and some new brake rotors and there was a great sale on some seats so I bought two new ones.

I made some progress on the new to me engine and it looks "weathered". The bottom end is clean and no shavings or chunks in the oil pan. Called a local AMCer and he gave me paint code amc 75 for the engine so I guess I'll try to find some. I think seymour carries it.

More engine progress was made. Took off the intake and oil pan. No chunks but there is sludge in the oil pan. The heads are going off tomorrow. Timing cover has a crack in it and I guess I need to find a shop who has a hot tank.

Another engine update. Heads off and the usual carbon build up. Camshaft is worn and a few lobes are almost rounded. Cylinder wall 3 is slightly scored but the rest are nice and cleanish. The pistons don't move around in the cylinders so that was a relief. Called a few engine shops and they'll have me quotes for cleaning, inspecting, and rebuilding.

Made some headway the past few weeks. I like the Sail blue a tad more than the AMC blue. Just noticed the paint on the bottom right of the oil pan didn't quite do right. Oops.

On to the exhaust manifolds,,, I didn't want to sand blast them or wire wheel them off so I went with electrolysis. I put both in for two days and I only had to brush off a few small spots on each. They haven't been painted in the pictures that's how they came out. Only reasons I didn't keep the headers was: The header could get caught on something where it was and then there was enough heat put out in the engine bay and up through the floor boards to heat an apartment.

For the 360 I decided to go with the Melling MTA1 camshaft, new lifters, Melling oil pump rebuild kit, new rings, full gasket/seal kit, and some other misc. items.

Alan, I have plenty of time in this adventure but I'm far off from having 30k in it.

Pistons are removed and can anyone tell me the clearances on the rod bearings? The only cylinders and pistons damaged are 5&6. I'll know the damage when I take it to get washed and honed or bored.

#6 piston damage. It is damaged at the bottom of the cylinder in the block.

Piston #5 damage. The damage is the same location in the adjacent cylinder.

How did piston 3 fair? You mentioned earlier in build the walls where scored.

No idea for pistons 5 and 6.
