I'm into the details with a local restoration shop on the body for the '79 CJ7 Renegade I've been tasked with reviving, one of which is what type of paint to put on it. It's going to be black either way - they prefer to use base/clear, but it will be a driver and I'm not stuck on BC/CC over a single stage product or something else. One of my first choices for a durable, low-maintenance finish is Nason Ful-thane 2K; I assume the Jeep was painted with enamel from the factory, but what are the pros and cons of the different finishes as relates to a CJ's typical environment?

IMO if you are shooting a solid color, use single stage. Especially considering it's a Jeep, branch scratches in clear will be white, and you pretty much have to shoot an entire section to touch-up BC/CC.

I would guess acrylic enamel. Not lacquer, not clear coat.

My choice would be Kirker Super Jet Black acrylic urethane enamel, $49 for 0.75 gal.

My logic against base/clear was similar, Tim. Lacquer is beautiful when done right, but it's a Jeep and good lacquer is hard to get ahold of. Thanks.

spi 2k black is top shelf, followed by most any other name brand 2k urethane. i would recommend they spray whatever brand they use for all the other work, wouldn't go lacquer unless it was a concourse resto that was lacquer from birth. ive used nason fulthane and had good results.[IMG] and[IMG]
