Ok guys - I rewired my whole Jeep with the exception of the alternator and the voltage regulator. Whoever owned the vehicle before put on a new alternator and didn't wire it right, so I don't have anything to go by. I'm not quite sure how to rewire the regulator, alternator, etc. I've considered just putting a Chevy alternator with an internal voltage regulator on it. Anybody know how the original should be wired? Ideas or comments about the Chevy unit? Thanks in advance

Go with the chevy one, Cheaper to replace, simple to wire, parts are easy to get, any Auto Parts store will have one.

If you want to wire the original get a shop manual for this jeep and it will have a wire diagram that will show how to wire it.

On my commando i had i made a mount for the alternator to keep it out of the way. i got a generic adjustment arm that you can get from the auto store (chrome section) I took a piece of threaded rod and bolted it into the hole in the head of the motor (304) I then too a piece of tubing and cut it so that it would space the alternator properly away from the motor and so that the pully was aligned. when i meaured the tubing properly i also welded washers to both sides of the tube to give it strength. I then slide the alternator on the threaded rod and bolted it up. For the arm i attached the one monut point to one of the top bolts of the water pump. Then i mounted the adjsutable part to the alternator top bolt. I adjsuted everything and tightened it down. And worked fine forr me. You do not have to weld the washers on, but it worked great for me. This way the alternator is mounted on the upper part of the passenger side of the motor, away from mud and grime that the bottom mount will give you.
