'74 CJ5 Suspension Bolt Sizes??

Hey guys,

I am going through putting a 2.5" 4wd.com lift on my '74 CJ5. I have the front finally, and I do mean finally, apart. In the process I got a little confused on the size of the bolts used and what should be there.

For example, the bolts holding the shackles to the frame and spring require a 5/8" socket for the head of the bolt, and an 11/16" socket for the nut. I tried to make sure the 5/8" won't fit on the nut, and it definately won't. I want to say it was the same way for the rear bolt as well.

Can anyone tell me the size of the bolts I should be buying at the hardware store to get my Jeep useable again??

Just went out and checked mine and they are 7/16" x 3" grade 8 with self locking nuts. Also noticed I need to replace spring bushings, such is life

By the way they are an odd bolt with a long shank and a short thread area. I snapped one out wheeling in the rocks (it snapped in the threads) and had to use a longer bolt and cut off the extra thread sticking out past the nut to get the right shank length. IIRC they are about 2 1/4" of shank and 3/4" of thread. Good luck.

 

Those are the same size as mine. You are OK, go with it. Those are the spring eye bolts.

 

When you say those are the same as yours (Cantilope), are you refering to what Dave said or I said?

I would assume Dave, but it is never good to assume.

Bringing this one back to the top. I bought new leaf springs, Rough Country, 2 1/2" lift. Energy suspension bushings, and 7/16" bolts with the correct length shank (I'll have to cut the excess threads off). The bushings I received, aren't large enough ID for a 7/16" bolt. Should I find other bushings? Or will a 3/8" grade 8 bolt be good enough?
