I'm looking at the manuals and all I see is that the 72 and later jeeps had 11" drums. Truth be told I think they all had 10's until 76. Anyone confirm this. Not as familiar w/ the new stuff.
74 CJ6 I found had 15X8 Renegade rims. The rims don't fit over the 11" drum conversion. 10's yes, 11's no.

    All the intermediates (72 - 75) had 11" drums.

Perhaps those Renegade wheels are earlier wheels?

Are the 11s finned? Maybe using postal 11s (non-finned, do not go over the backing plate like the finned ones) would allow the wheels to fit.

Confirming what Lynn said. The '74 that I restored had 11" drums on all corners. I pulled the 11's that I have on Lulu from an intermediate in the junkyard. The 11" finned drums have a larger "skirt" toward the back than the non-finned. I have aftermarket 15x8 rims and they fit over the finned drums fine.

    Just FYI.

My conversion on my 5 was from a '74. All 4 drums, finned. 16" wheels fit fine.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but is there really a difference in stopping power between 10 and 11 inch brakes?

VERY noticable difference for me, and I only went to 11's up front. Stops much straighter, and with less pedal effort.

    Very well worth the cost.

Positutely. I had 10" stock, swapped to 11" Big difference. Then drilled them. Even BIGGER difference!!

I guess disk's make a huge difference as Patrick asked at Tellico how far after we got out of the water crossing was it before I had brakes, heck I had brakes in the water. To me the disk brakes turned out to be a no brainer compared to any drums after they were installed, front brakes do roughly 70% of the braking so I would think that 11" brakes on the front would make a huge improvement but disks would be that much better and then you don't have to drill them to let the water out. Although I will probably drill my new 10" rear drums now, and yes all 72-75 cj5's had 11" brakes from the factory.

I took these rims off of a 74 CJ6 and sold it before looking at the drums.
Why wouldn't the rims fit over the 11'' drum conversion? I bought the 11" conversion as a kit from 4Wheel Drive Parts Wholsellers years ago.

To my knowledge, 15" rims will fit over an 11" drum.... Not sure what the problem might have been with yours?

I have aftermarket 15's, over 11" drums. And on the '74, it had stock 15's (Slotted Mags) over 11" drums.

    Something sounds amiss...
