Hey everyone I have a 72 cj5 under resto, and the gas tank has a badly made patch put on it using what looks like fiberglass and bondo  , but as of yes we cant get it out, we're hoping that lifting the back end up will maybe make the rear axle drop down, and we'll be able to slide it out, but if it doesn't will we have to take the rear axle off? oh and we also came up with having to cut the hitch off and getting it off that way then just welding it back on......comments, or suggestions? thanks

I've got a 72 CJ5 also, but it sounds like I'm missing something in your dialogue or maybe yours has been modified. I just dropped the skid plate, four screws along the rear crossmember and two each in two brackets behind the rear axle, then one bolt on the front lip of the tank and two at the back corners. The two in the back can be difficult to get a back up on, but it's not as bad as working on a Honda! R)

Damn it. I typed a long introduction, and a bunch of questions and promptly lost it...

    Oh well...

Howdy from southwestern Pennsylvania. I haven't dropped the tank on my '75, but it appears to be easy - at least I hope so, I have to change the sending unit. It should drop out without removing the axle. DoubleK is right about the skid... most came factory with a tank skid plate. You'll need to remove this. But, and this is big, just like with the rear bumper, former owners may have added their own special touches that will make life increasingly difficult for you...

    Good luck.

And, everyone here at EarlyCJ5 likes pictures, so expect to be askeed for pictures of yer rig (jsut as DoubleK has already done).

You should see the HUGH booty fab plate steel hitch that is on the back of my rig... probably weighs at least a hundred pounds... I'll get around to cuttin' it off one of these days. Good luck.
