I think I got a 4 speed T-18 recently from a co- workers garage. It's not clean enough to find a casting number yet but it does have " C 2604208" on the top and a metal tag bearing "5359389RGA B2" and "15 71" . Does this mean anything to anyone? Thank you.

Not yet. You should have a casting number on the left side, toward the rear at the top/middle

"535 9389" is a Jeep PN. From the '70s? Probably too early for me to look up (I'll try later - still at work).

Is it a 4WD transmission? With a texas pattern? How long is the input shaft?

Thank you! What is folks' experience with mating a T-177 or T-176 with the AMC V8? Novak mentions this tranny was primarily used with the 258 I6. It also mentions longer input shaft... Is the extra gear worth the trouble?

Actually, in reading further Novak doesn't mention easy compatibility with the Dana 20 transfer case... ah, well.

I have a t176 with a Dana 300 behind my 258 and I really like this combination a lot. The tranny is stout enough to handle V8 power, in fact Jeep offered it behind the 360 in fullsized Jeeps in the 80's.

the only real problem (if there is a probpem) with the T series is the shift tower can wear out where the ball of the shift lever rides; the tower being made out of aluminum, and the lever being steel; the two tower pins can wear as well, that keep the lever aligned properly.
that being said, I put over 150K on mine in my 81 J10 stepside, no problems.

The number 5359389 is the same as the T-177 that I got from a wrecked 81 CJ-5 I believe it will bolt up to a T-150 bell housing and a Dana 300 transfer case. It will handle V-8 power no problem. This transmission has a nice gear ratio spread with first gear being 3.82.
