66 Cj5 Engine Decision

    I would make a list of what you need to put it back to a v6. It may be cheaper to repair the sbc conversion. Brackets, mounts, radiator, flywheel, accessories add up fast. Also look at what was cut, it will need to be repaired or replaced. It may be cheaper to buy a doner jeep than to piece it together.

    Tried to start a private message or 'conversation' on this, but don't know where it went off to... (Problem exists between keyboard and chair)

    S&J called and I will be picking the block up later today.

    If you want to take a look at the other block, I'll be working on the Jeep this weekend.

    You can take it to your machine shop and verify that it is good and then make me an offer...

    Are the yards still in existence over east of Sullivan Rd and north of the 90?
    If so, then you can probably find everything you need there.

    Me, again. Maps show Spaldings, about half way between Argonne Rd and Pines Rd and north of the I-90. Visible from the 90, or used to be.

    I have a 225 block that is at .30 right now and needs to be bored to .60

    327's (and 283's, 305's, 307's) work just fine. Not that much heavier than the F head. In fact with aluminum heads, they are almost the same. And the stress on the rest of the drivetrain is wholly related to your choice of tires and use of right foot. If the Jeep is set up for an sbc, I wouldn't hesitate putting another back in and in your case a Vortec 305 would seem the perfect choice. I ran a 327 in my 3B for almost 2 years with nary a single drivetrain issue with everything else being stock. It was replaced by a 350 but pretty much everything else was replaced then also.

    Thanks for the info. I think I have a block but its being inspected by my machinist right now. Just in case, what do you figure is fair for a bare block?
