I pulled the jeep out this week and set the timing up to around 11 degrees and that helped with the hesitation. Seems to be running well. I did the upgrade to a motorcraft dist. with large cap, rotor and summit elect box. I did not get much performance gains from this but it does run smooth. My prestolite ign was cutting in and out. Still looking for power steering parts.

12* is were i have mine set, much smoother idle than the 8* that is spec'd from the factory. Really wakes the motor up, watch out for pinging under high loads though.

Alright have a new problem. The jeep has been running well and I have put some miles on her. Lately I have been hearing a wine in second gear and today was hot and the wine was worse. I think there is a bearing going out in the t14. Is there a danger in running it this way? I would like to make it until winter. Then tear it out and fix or find a 4 speed. 1st, 3rd, and reverse work fine. I have not checked the gear lube in a while but it does not leak and was full. I guess it had to be next to go, it is the only thing on this jeep that I have not taken apart.

I would check it out for a rear bearing going out, you just mite lose the whole transmission. I would not think it would last until winter, you just mite being doing a four speed install sooner than you had planned. Just my view on it.

Could be. Seems the front main bearing wears out first on the T-14 and T-15 Borg-Warner 3-speeds. Check the oil, then run it through the gears with the transfer case in neutral. A whine that goes away in top gear would make me suspect the front bearing first - it's more supported in top gear than in second.

These transmissions are light and easy to R&R in your driveway. Not a big job - you can easily do a rebuild in a weekend. Just pay careful attention to how the transmission came apart, and put the same thickness of snap rings back that came out. Or send your transmission to Herm for a rebuild.

The original T14 in my CJ5 blew itself up 20 years ago with no warning whatsoever. No whine, no noise, just driving along one day and BANG!. Didn't even crack open the case to see what the problem was, I swapped it for a T-176 4-speed and have had that ever since.

I think the tc and the tranny share the same oil. Would the tranny going out contaminate the tc? What would the cost be to go to a 4 speed if I can find one? Do I need a new shorter driveshaft?

    Thanks guys.

I think I have fixed the latest problem with my tranny. The TC shift lever was loose enough to make a horrible vibe when in 2nd gear. I was driving with my daughter and had her hold the shifter tight as I shifted. All the noise was gone. So I took it apart and added a washer or 2. All is good now. I will wait on the t-18 until I have a real problem.

I found some of the parts I need for power steering. I think all I need is a PS coupler. Will my manual steering shaft work? I think it should. I will get new lines and clean all the parts. Hopefully it all works. These are all from a 73 cj5 with a 304 that I found local.

I also took the brake booster and a skid plate for the tank. The booster seems to be missing something that would push on the MC. Can you guys give me some info on what I bought? I think there should be a rod sticking out if the hole to the MC. Can I buy one somewhere or does it come with the booster if I buy a new one? I believe that all these parts are original off a 73 cj but I'm sure you guys will let me know.

I see that I have to drill out 2 holes to mount the power booster. I think the bottom holes will line up with the existing holes. The booster ***. has aluminum wedges to angle the booster down away from the hood.[IMG][/IMG]

Nice, nice, nice! I would like to know about the power brakes as well. I would like to convert mine and wonder what all I need. Also if you need an intermediate steering shaft for power steering I have one you can have. I replaced the u-joint but wasn't satisfied with the result. I would buy a borgeson if I were you. Not cheap but they work sooo much better than stock. No slop.

I will look into the Borgeson shaft. Will it work with my stock steering wheel? Anybody know what parts are missing from the booster? Is it a 73 booster. Thanks again.

Hum for the booster, i don't think there any booster available in 72-75 jeep cj5. For my cj5 1975 it took the booster/mc/prop valve from a Yj. You will need to drill 4 new hole on the firewall. Also you're suppose to have a small push rod between mc and booster.

Power Brakes was an option from 73-75 from what I have found on here searching. The booster looks like its missing a hex head rod between the booster and mc. I'm staying with drums all around.

My '73 304 CJ-5 bought new had power steering and brakes. My '75 CJ-6 bought new had power steering and brakes. Fairly certain power brakes were an option for all the intermediates, '72-75. Surprisingly, power brakes seems to not have been a very popular option at the time, and not a lot of power brake boosters for this era are out there. The '76-on CJs had power options too, but the design for the booster changes (along with almost everything else).

That power booster and parts is a great find - but you may have to send it to a rebuilder to make it work (no cores!). There are places that just rebuild power boosters for old cars, and they could rebuild it. Look in Hemmings or online.

Another possibility is to adapt a hot rod booster to that bracket - check Summit or Jegs for what's offered.

http://boosterdeweyexchange.com/ That was easy. $117 for rebuild with bead blasting and paint. $20 push rod w/ seal. 4 day turnaround. Crome is $300 more. I might have paid to much for it but I needed the brackets anyway. I don't really need a 73 after all but why not. On to the power steering!
