Where was the jack and lug wrench location on a '59 CJ5? I saw a picture of one that was mounted on the passenger side firewall but I don't know if that was original or a modification.

On my '73, the 4-way lug wrench fastened on top of the toolbox under the passenger seat.

I'll go out on a limb here and say the underseat tool box. Never seen a jack mount on an early, until the fender mounted jack came along. That was late 60's??

Did the earlies have a factory jack? I've never seen a place on my '67. Or my '70, or '71.

Yep, all had the ratchet type screw jack and all that I have been around, it was just in the tool box. I do not believe there was ever any other provision for mounting the jack.

This is a factory jack although not the factory placement:

I thought that they came with a scissors jack and lug wrench in the factory tool box. That's what mine had, new from the factory.

I don't recall ever seeing them in the parts book or on the dealer shelves.

I have about a half dozen of the ratchet type jacks in the shop and they were all in pre AMC Jeeps (and maybe pre Kaiser Jeep also). I have never bought a new Jeep, but the high occurance of one type jack with old Jeeps suggests that they probably did come with those jacks (and the standard lug wrench that fits the jack). The ones I have were all either painted black or green. I did the red just to make it easier to find in the mud.

    screw type 72 and prior
    scissor type 73 and later

interesting enough, parts manual shows: Spring, Jack Hold Down, used with screw type jack, 72 and prior Qty 2 P/N 936132

as Tim says, no pic in manual.

Here's a picture of largely stock, unchanged 1967 CJ5. I'm told the bracket in front of the battery is original and was for the jack.

I thought they were just placed inside a bag of somekind and placed in the tool box.
I don't think that bracket is factory. ( but I'm also guessing)

Hey, thanks for all the replies. So it sounds like if I want to be authentic, I could get away with a jack and lug wrench in the toolbox under the seat.

I can't remember where (probably eBay) but I saw a picture of a CJ5 that had a jack mounted on the firewall. The posts claimed it to be in original condition. But it may have been a later model, I can't remember. I know my firewall has holes all over the place so I thought maybe there was supposed to be a jack mount somewhere.

    Thanks again.

'76 and up has no tool box, so I presume it goes under the hood. And holds a scissors jack.

    I'm guessing add-on.
I've never seen a hydraulic bottle jack come with any Jeep.
    But, I could be wrong.

My 55 has no place for a jack anywhere.....

But I'm wondering, about the jeep in link, is that the correct mirror or shouldn't it be round?

That's a screw jack, I believe. Could be original, and came in the toolbox.
