clutch linkage

I am in search of the perfect clutch linkage for my 68 if anyone has found it let me know. I have ordered two ball joint rods ends and all thread, coming any day I figure it will sufice atleast until I come up with something that eliminates the whole darned mess. I am also contemplating a push pull cable, has anyone tried that? Seems if you could find the right size and rig up some brackets on the frame and transfer case it would work really well.

thanks for the info. have you tried the chain linkage? Advance adapters sells good stuff but they are pretty high. Take advantage sometimes i think. any way my rod ends came tonight so i'll do that for now. I just figured since this was a fabricators forum there may be more ideas. This clutch problem seems to be inherent to jeeps should be an easy fix and thought out by now.

The perfect clutch linkage would be a hydraulic setup. The problem is that the frame flexes so much, it causes the cable clutch linkage setup to not work properly. I have never tried chain.. but I'd think the frame flexing would cause it to have problems as well.. but maybe not as bad ?

 

I made a system with pulleys and cable. Due to frame flex the cable would rub on the pulley and eventually break...usually at a bad time. I am now using the AA kit and it works great, even under extreme flex. Just my $.02

 

The only way to take frame flex out of the equation is to go hydraulic. I'm using a Wilwood MC (high volumn) with a Wilwood pull-back slave. I can twist the Jeep 'til it breaks, but the clutch still works.

I also went hydraulic on my 67 cj5. I used a ford clutch master cylinder and a pull slave and have had no problems with the setup.

 

sounds like I'm going to look into hydraulic, a project for next summer, that would be the way to go. I havent had as much problem with frame flex as I have with parts wear, seems like a weekly thing to readjust the clutch linkage. I rigged up a linkage yesterday made with two rod end swivels so half of the wear points are gone. Maybe I'll only have to readjust every month now. Getting it ready for summer now then hunting season so fab time is over for this year. Thanks for your help and info.

hey posimoto did you keep the frame pedals or switch to swinging. this is on the list but my old AA chain drive has very rarely let me down. it's kind of like a safety limiter.I've had it so twisted it was teetering on opossite corners. the DUSY is next for us.did the 'con last year ,no problems when doo they start getting bad weather for the Dusy ?

 

I used the hydraulic set up from Novak. It is a Toyota LC slave remachined (IIRC) and a GM fork. I used a Wrangler MC with a 3/4" bore. I redid some of the supplied brackets to make the slave cylinder mounts stiffer and closer to the clutch fork. It works pretty good, but a little touchy. I have hanging pedals from a later model Jeep.

 

I would like to keep the frame mounted pedals ,can a hydro still be done???

 

Yes, but you will have to come up with a way to operate the master cylinder.
