Exploring the possibility of a 4.3/SM465 conversion into an ECJ5. I've got:

'97 4.3L Vortec complete from an auto Astrovan. (flex plate)
'76-'83ish bell housing from 3/4 ton pickup
    '79ish SM465

Wondering what kind of flywheel is going to be compatible with my auto 4.3L. Been poking around for a complete S-10 to possibly grab a flywheel, clutch, and a few other odds and ends, but most donors locally seem to be auto, 4cyl, or 60deg models. Will SBC flywheels work with the V6? Can I just bolt one on an auto motor? Would I be better off holding out for a complete donor?

'86 and newer 4.3 or SBC V-8 with small crank bolt pattern and one piece rear main seal interchanges. I researched this about 5 or so years ago and the V-8 and V-6 flywheel part #'s are the same. There are differences in ring gear tooth count, 168 and 153 IIRC. I'd go with the 168 if possible. Larger diameter= less torque to turn motor over and a little more mass for low end torque. Also allows for a larger clutch. I've got one from an Astro van for my 4.3 that allows an 11" clutch. Some of the smaller 153 tooth flywheels only allow for a 10.5" clutch. Nickmil

Too bad you're not closer, I've got a good 4.3 TBI out of a 92 S10 with everything including full harness and ECM.

Clint if you can find the writeup I did for the 4.3 swap a couple years ago, there are a ton of part numbers in it....

Probably the only part number I have memorized:

    10105832

It's a GM P/N for the flywheel you're looking for. Nothern Auto Parts can sell you a new one (probably a knock off) for pretty cheap.
