For those of you that own or have driven a 48 cj2a...what is the top speed on them with out an overdrive?

The fastest mine has gotten up to is about 45-47.

Trust me, you REALLY don't want to go much faster than 45 in an 80" wheelbase vehicle with a center of gravity that high.

My engine is screaming at that speed and I don't even what to know what RPM I'm turning. I still have original tires so it's a little scary.

I think you just gave me my new signature.... R)

I'm hoping for 50-55 with OD on mine, with a fresh L4134 though I'll never use it (unless public speed limit goes down on interstate)

my very first Jeep (1947 CJ-2A) went as fast as I wanted to push it. I know it hit 70 once in a while (yea I was in HS).

Oh yea it had a swapped in 327 chebby engine in it and 15" wide 60 series tires with no lift....

With an overdrive? I'd think you could do 60. Might take a while to get there...

While mine is longer;) an inch; with stock steering, 2.5" lift and 33's, it is perfectly fine until about 75....

I'm turning a bit over 3k RPM to do about 45. If I felt like punishing the engine it could probably do 60.

I can run up to 70 - 75 with the 4.88s and V6 OD. Could do that with the front a D27 before the D30 swap as well. I have found the saginaw makes a world of dif in how comfortable it is at speed.

pretty good timing for your question..

we've been out on the road now for over 2 weeks driving our two 1948 2As across the country. mine has the original flathead 4 in it with an overdrive. across the flatlands i'm able to get around 50-55 out of it, if the wind isn't blowing against you--if it is you're lucky to get 45 out of it.

going up over the rockies i was doing 25 mph in 2nd gear and that was all she got. then again going down the other side of some of those mountains in Colorado i was able to hit 60!

i have to say that i'm impressed, mine's bone stock original, ross steering and all, and it's perfectly comfortable (not the least bit scary) going 50-55 down an interstate all day long. just stick in the right lane haha and watch out for those truckers doing 80+, the trucks seem to create a vacuum and pull the little jeep into them as they pass. it keeps you awake.

I wouldn't go much over 50-55MPH. But that is my opinion. With an overdrive you should get it. My 71' does 55-60 with no problems. But it is also a saginaw and 81" wb. :p:stout:

Before my OD and rebuild my all stock 2a would do 55 or so, I once touched 60 (on my GPS) but it was absolutely screaming and took awhile to get there... math says 4000rpm should = 60mph. ....keep in mind these motors have a big long stroke, questionable balancing and only three main bearings....

W/ OD and a fresh rebuilt L134 on 31" swampers I can cruise fairly comfortably at 45 to 60, it just depends on the wind and hills. Most of the time it does 50-55 okay.

I will mention, the first time you need to do a panic stop from 55mph might be enough to cure you of ever wanting to go that fast again.

My '71 5 can comfortably cruise at 60-70. Its alls tock with a v-6, surprisingly it glides straight as an arrow...

and as for your panic stop i had that one happen today...gpoing about 40mph when some ******* cut me off in a honda crx...nearly ended up in his front seat. that was in my '48.

I would think that the vacuum created by a passing truck should be slightly less than the vacuum created by your backside on the seat cover! :oops:R)

Just remember that your not driving a vehicle built for speed. :hurrican:

I guess my 3a may have hit 60mph with the L-head, and OD engaged on a completely flattened (by erosion) hill. I really just wanted to see my new signature. which now that I see it is a bit much!
