I lucked out and found an original owners manual for the '73. It says the front axles are full floating and I'm trying to explain that to myself and am not doing a good job. Can anyone explain why the front axles are considered full floating?:?

It is because the bearings are supporting the wheels on s pindle rather than being pressed on to the axle shaft. All front axles are full floating. The rear is where you find the differnt varietys, of flanged, 2 pieces and flaoting and semi floating

Is that because of the unibearing?

Yup. If you wanted to get technical it's called 3/4 floating, but not full floating. Nickmil

It's where the bearing is non-serviceable, meaning it can't easily be taken apart like on our old Jeeps and packed/serviced. An example would be most front wheel drive cars have bearings that can't easily be serviced. You replace the whole hub assembly or whole bearing assembly or "unit" hence the name unit bearing.
