A jeep part place is going out of business. I was thinking of trying to pick up a 4 speed auto tranny for the '73 (304 V8 and Dana 20). What is a fair price range for these trannies based on previous experiences?

Is a 4spd in a CJ even possible? I was recently proven wrong when I said a 3spd wasn't probable (although it is only a 10" rear shaft), but a 4spd? Maybe for a Commando.

    Do they have any:

    0-9 speedo units?
Unmolested early or intermediate dash panels?

Yeah I didn't know 4 speed autos fit. Heck 4 speed manuals cause some issues.

Well, the T-18 auto and the T-15 manual (currently in) are both listed as having 1-1/8" 10 spline inputs and 1-3/8" 6 spline outputs... is there a reason the T-18 won't go in?

If the shop is getting rid of a T-18 with a D20 adapter on the back end, GET IT! Then ship to 66046. Thanks. R)

Dana the T18 and D20 will work. That's what I have in my '73 (now minus the 232 and soon to have 360 installed). Where is this jeep parts place that's going out of business?

Tumbleweed had a 700R4 in a flatfender. IIRC

The T 18 is 11.87 inches long. Without bellhousing.

The 700r4 is equivalent to 16.4 inches long without bellhousing.

My rear driveshaft is around 15 inches long as is. That would make a rear driveshaft around 10 inches long if someone were to swap in a 700r4. Not saying it can't be done, but if I were going to do this I would definitely stretch the wheelbase to help with driveshaft angle. Hell, I wouldn't mind stretching it now if I knew how!!

Even the TH350 3 speed auto is 15 inches without belhousing.

Novak Jeep has a really good knowledge base section that goes over nearly all the transmissions manual and auto.

Someone on the site is swapping in a C4 (Ford medium case 3-speed automatic) - that may be shorter than the TH350. Any automatic in a CJ-5 is a tight fit at best from what I've seen - that's why Jeep never offered it from the factory.

Ah...for some reason I'd had it squarely in my head that T-15 was man and T-18 an auto option....no idea where I got that from. I thought an easy swap might be fun for the right price, but not important enough to go through major undulations. I'll ask about a T18 with adapter, though if they have iot most probably it would just be a tranny on the shelf. Dave, its on 3350Washington street, Houston 77007. Years ago I'd bought a hardtop for the TJ there. Its kind of a well organized Jeep junkyard.

Thanks Dana. I'll check the place out. I still need a few parts. Don't discount the T-18. It's a good four speed with a granny first gear. Not as low as the T-18A but still a good, heavy transmission.

Gawd I hope I don't muddy the water any worse, but I was under the impression through some discussion it had been established that the "A" was not necessarily the designator of wide/close ratio. I think Tim has this sorted out.

There are Jeep T-18s that are wide ratio (Wagoneer, J-truck before 1971) and close ratio (CJ-5, Commando). All the Jeep T-18A transmissions are wide ratio AFAIK.

Went by, not really any CJ5 stuff. Mostly 76+ doors and Xfer case, etc. For 5s they had tons of rims, tops (already have one though), no T18s. About 30 days until they shut down. I'm guessing they lost the lease to a condo developer.
