    Hey guys,

I started a thread about a week or two ago about the "4 Wheel Drive" stencil for the tailgate of my '58 CJ-5. Based on Michael Perry's unrestored 1959 CJ-5 - featured about 1/2 way down this page: http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Dating/4WDStencil.html - I determined which one I needed.

NJRanger was cool enough to send me a digital copy of the stencil. As coolness continued, Jaysplace then contacted me and said he could make a decal version to save time and paint etc. for a very reasonable price.

Since my Jeep is stock-ish but not nice enough to worry about being absolutely historically correct, I thought this sounded like a great idea. Especially since the only decal parts are the actual lettering, it is not a big square sticker, it is many little stickers.
Jay sent me the decal and here is the play by play:

    Decal in its paper:

Ding I wanted to be sure to work around so placement may not be exacting enough for the purists, but I am happy!

Rub backing with credit card to convince the decal to stay on front paper:

Peel backing and carefully apply sticky side down at desired location:

Rub again with credit card to convince it to stick to the tailgate:

    Peel carefully:

I think I did it slightly canted but I am not concerned! My whole Jeep is canted...

Obviously I do not know how long these will last, but they seem pretty sticky, and they are vinyl so I think they will be fine for my purposes.

I hope it is OK to make a plug here: If you're interested PM Jaysplace - $8!!!!

Looks good, I like how easy it is.

I found the stencil online a while back and printed out on card stock then spray painted.

Sizing was a little off, and still need to follow up with pin stripping brush to sharpen lines.

    Looks, great!

How'd that blue and white graffiti get on your Jeep? ;)

Hah, that is off my old 1973 BMW 2002, long gone, but the posts that mounted the badge to the trunk fit almost perfectly with the two holes with the screws in them in the gate so I removed the screws and just kinda forced it on there!

Glad you got it on OK. As for life expectancy this the same material I use on outdoor signs so if left outside all the time you can expect 6-8 years no problem. If it spends a lot of its life in the shop life expectancy is unlimited.

Back when Jeep pretty much had the monopoly on Four Wheel Drive. I remember when the early Subarus offered it as an option, it was a big deal.

    x2, that's very cool!

I remember my '63 Scout had badges that read "All Wheel Drive". I wonder if Jeep had a trademark on the term "Four Wheel Drive" back then, or if IH just did that to differentiate themselves from Jeep...

My Diggerjeep has a Dana 70 with dual wheels on the back. What is the correct nomenclature for this configuration? 6 wheel drive 6x6, 6x4 or what? I guess "all wheel drive" would be appropriate.

I think 6WD seems appropriate in your case.

Yeah I think the PO put new rear quarters on it in the 70s and did not have the heart to drill holes...
