i'm getting parts together for my cj6 build and have some questions. i have a '97 4.3 out of a s-10 blazer and will be bolting up a way older sm465. the bellhousing i have does not have any stamping or casting numbers. the guy i bought it from pulled it out of a mid '70's truck or blazer. how can i tell if i can use this housing and what flywheel can i use? i've heard 168 and 153 tooth but how can i tell what i need? also what clutch and pressure plate kit should i get?

First, the SM 465 uses a large index bellhousing with a diameter of about 5.125" (versus the small index which is about 4 11/16"). I would also be looking to use the 168 tooth flywheel. Here is a link to a few Chevy bellhousing photos to maybe identify what you have:
    Identifying Chevy Bellhousings

As part of the bellhousing selection, you should also decide what type of clutch linkage you will use. Some of the many Chevy bellhousing iterations are much more amenable to a hydraulic installation. I would not use a 153 tooth housing but doubt any of those ever were large index.

As for a clutch assembly, I would go with one of the aftermarket 11" setups. Hays, Centerforce, McLeod. And the diaphragm style usually requires slightly less pedal force to operate.

Look at a 460486 bell housing. It can handle up to a 12" clutch if you're so inclined.

thanks duffer for that link. i found my casting numbers "6263756" which is a truck bell and can fit a 12" clutch in there according to that link.

I used the stock S-10 V-6 flywheel and clutch disk.

with my '97 4.3 it has the oil pan that's all aluminium and a part of the bell for the auto trans. i should still be able to use the pan with this bell right?

From what I've read all one piece rear main seal engines were externally balanced.

External balance. Has a bunch of holes with a few dowels inserted. It came with my motor.
