Don't do a vertical weld on the frame rail. Round or like this <=>. You can get the 1/4 plate to bend my scoring it deep with an angle grinder, bend it and then weld it closed. Grind flat and you're done. Turn up the heat pretty high in the your welder. 1/4 don't deform too easy and you can form easy with a hammer. I had to use 1/4 plate to make fishplates on my frame job because they didn't have 3/16. I wound up over building it by a lot.

Isn't the mocked up rear shackle pointing the wrong way?

I've had a set of Wrangler springs in the pile for years. One day I may get around to using them on something. I think the thing was to use Wrangler rear springs on all four corners.

Removed the rear shock mounts, the draw bar, old brake hose/line, clutch arm and rod. The rear most crossmember is just about rusted out
I'll be picking up more steel and hopefully I can find some leaf springs.

Yep, that sandwich make a perfect rust incubator and will rust through while the rest of the frame remains relatively pristine. I just made a new one out of 2x3x1/4 steel tube.

Removed the rear crossmember without destroying it. I was removing some spring hanger rivets, throwing a 3lb hammer at a chisel to remove a rivet and missed. My thumb is more than likely broke and my index finger was caught in the crossfire. If someone would come over and hold the chisel i'd appreciate it:D

Also BTDT with a 3# sledge. My left thumb popped like a grape, in half and out from under the nail. That was 15 years ago, and it's still not right. I feel your pain. I hope it's not as bad as you fear.

Center punch and drill those rivets and then hit with an air chisel and they pop right off.

X2 they come off pretty easy once you center punch and drill.

Yup, just popped a shock bracket last weekend that way. Took a thin cutoff wheel to the welds, a few whacks with a cold chisel between the frame and bracket, Presto!

I went and got some springs today. As soon as I saw what my YJ choices were I knew I had to pick the "Renegade" and proceeded to laugh at the circumstances. Very long story short I had to make two trips to the junkyard and I noticed two springs were bent on the "Renegade" so I pulled two others off a red yj.

The haul: three 4-5 leaf spring packs and one 6 leaf. I guess I'll pull a leaf from the 6 pack. I got a steering shaft from the red yj for free. $100 well spent I hope.

There were 4-, 5-, and 6-leaf packs available for different top and engine options. They often had different lengths of idividual leaves. If you mix and match, try to match packs for left and right.

    24x24 1/4 and I got a foot of 2x3x1/4

I'll extend the frame in the rear (roughly 3-6") and hopefully the plate is enough to build the front spring hangers. I'll cut a piece of 2x3 in half and attempt to use it for the rear spring hangers.
Courtesy of Ryan, I have the front hoop measurements all figured out.
