Like a lot of other guys, I am tired of glass packs. Too loud. Have had them for 30 some years and other then being a little loud, they were OK. About 3 years ago, I put a new set on and they were a lot louder from the get go, and so I replaced them. The ones Dan talked about in ( http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31045&highlight=mufflers ) looked pretty good so I gave them a try ( Never could find your results and thoughts on them Dan) Well I really liked the looks and fit up, but the sound is pretty bad. Not only are they real loud, but as my son says, they sound like a straight six with a big hole in the muffler. In my mind, they are really bad. Maybe I should have gotten smaller one. I have 2" collectors and thought that if I had gotten 1-1/2" maybe they might have worked. I did a search on mufflers, and found a lot of ideas , but could not find anybody that had found some that they really tried and they liked them. Anybody have any thoughts? See pics below of how they look. As I said, I thought they did look pretty good.
    Thanks

I like the $17 Thrush Turbos from Pep Boys. Not too loud, not too quiet, they seem to last fairly long. The good thing is they are short, and work well with fenderwell headers and turnouts in front of the rear tires.

My pipes run inside the frame to mufflers (Turbos) mounted just in front of the rear axle, then turn out behind the rear wheels. They are fairly quiet and out of harms way. Sitting on top of the mufflers is going to be loud no matter what mufflers you are using IMHO.

Mike, you might try exiting the pipes out the back for better sound etc. We made the turn inward between the spring and the frame. A measurment between the spring and the pipe says if they should touch, I've got bigger problems than a bent pipe ! [IMG]

Not apples for apples but my 318v8 sounded AWSOME using emptied out glass packs (yeah I pounded em out to just tubes) with the pipes coming out infront of the rear wheels, (heres the nice sounding part) I took a set of old glass packs and cut the one end off at an angle to make resonator tubes a full 18" long for both sides.
I got good "Deep Throut" rumble and also "Off the line" ROAR!
There basically straight pipes with reso tubes.
Resonator tubes may help with the sound.:)

A lot of good replys, thanks guys, but don't think any of them will work. Don't think I can go back to the original one muffler way because of my PTO shaft. If I remember right, that is one of the reasons I went with the headers in the first place (plus I was young and thats what young guys do R) ) Slaghammer's way looked kind of good, put don't think I can do it because of the rear gas tank, but I could be wrong on this. I thought about Flowmasters, but my son has them on his truck and they still seem a little loud to me ( yeah I know, I'm getting old) With you guys that used flowmasters or thrush turbos, did you use 2". or did you size down to 1-3/4" or 1-1/2" ? I was kind of wondering if that might have been my problem with the JC Whitney ones. I am no muffler expert so I don't know. One thing I can say is that a lot of guys don't like the heat from them being in front of the wheels, but that has never seemed to be too bad of a problem. Maybe living in cold Wyoming helps on that point.:)

Well, this might be a little more than you were looking to do, but if you had wider axles, you can easily run the pipes along the frame beyond the rear tires and then out.

I have had generic turbos on my jeep for 10+ yrs. I think they are the midas lifetime warranty ones. I like the way they sound and have a little grumble when downshifting. I have headers and the mufflers are 2" in and out. If I had to do it again I might go a little smaller. I think that the 225 likes a little more backpressure. I had galsspacks on before and they were loud.
    Hope this helps.
