Guys - got a '76 waggy to pull the axles from for the '62 Scout and found it has a 360 still sitting in it. Most of the Accessories have been stripped from the motor, though the heads, intake, exhaust man, PS, timing cover are all on it. Looks to need Oil pump, starter, Alt, square bore Intake (for FI), distro etc.

How hard is it to find Accessories and parts in general for these motors? It's going to go the the youngest, and want to make sure it's not something that will need stuff ordered all the time and cost a fortune if he has to work on it. It would get a rebuild, just don't know enough about AMC motors to know what I would be getting into.

My first instincts were to go with a SBC and be done with it, but have stumbled on a T-18 for the V8 that looks to be ready for either a D20 or D18 to just bolt up. It 'might' save him some $$$ and am looking to weigh the options.

Looking for pros and cons - all input welcome... Other tranny options are a NP435 or SM465 I have laying in the shop.

There's no trouble finding parts. You'll likely have to find another donor to get all the brackets and accessories though.

I think there are a lot of worn-out 360s out there. They tend to suffer from low hot idle oil pressure at high miles. The oil pump turns in the timing cover, and wear causes excess clearance and low OP. They also seem to to experience cam bearing failure pretty often. The low OP leads to rod bearing failure and the end of the engine, typically.

Hard to tell if you have a good one or not with all those parts missing.

Certainly a modern SBC with native TPI will get much better mileage than the 360. Getting decent mileage from a Waggy means a SBC/TPI swap or diesel conversion. The 360 was never known for great efficiency.

Also - they can make good power. The heads flow well, and the engine responds well to a hotter cam and better intake/carburetion. The 4350 is a good off-road carburetor, but the spread-bore pattern is unique. The factory exhaust manifolds are good for iron manifolds.

Looking at your list of missing parts, all that stuff is available from the parts store.

Ya - I found the parts with more searching and they don't look to be 'order' items on most FLAP sites (kinda the way I was looking to see how hard parts might be for him to get).

Did some more digging on rebuild costs and the Master kit for a SBC is @ $850 vs the 360 @ $1425 - I can get a whole lot of other 'stuff' for the difference.

Right now I am leaning back to the SBC for just ease and lower inital cost.

I am rebuilding a 360 now, all hard parts were available thrugh O'rileys or Summit.
Edelbrock intake and balancer were found on E-Bay no problem. Maching costs are the same for AMC or SBC.

I'm building a 401 and the parts are easy to find. Yes, a little more expensive but the AMC v8's are great motors. So is the Chevy.

I like keeping Jeep Jeep even though Jeep is made from everything............
