It's too narrow a wheel for that tire.
It can be done but not a good idea.

So, if i went with a 15x8 wheel, what backspacing?
    15x6 factory had 3.5ish backspacing i believe.
Do i need to the same, or less?

I have the geo disc conversion on the front and 10" drums on back.

Just to give you another option that you have probably already investigated...any metric tire starting with 245 would give you about 9.5" wide tire that would fit better on the 6"wide rims. Something 245/85/R15 or 235/85/R15 would give you close to 31 inch diameter, but it does not look like many options are available in those ratios. Looks like you would end up more in the 29 inch tire diameter (like a 235/75/R15).

Note that Tire Rack shows specs for all the tires they sell that includes a recommended rim width, maximum and minimum. They also show the section width, which will tell you how far the tire will bulge out beyons a specific rim width. BFG shows a minimum 7" rim for that size KO2, with 8.5" recommended. The 30x9.50/15 shows 6.5" minimum, which you could get away with. Realize that a wide tire on a narrow wheel bulges a lot, which will rub more and limit your turning radius.

The Jeep wheels have 3.5" or 3.75" backspacing. Typically you keep the same backspacing and the extra wheel width then extends outward from the wheel mounting surface. There are wheels with less backspacing, like 2.5", which has the same effect as adding a wheel spacer.

I have 30x9.50 KM3 on my stock wheels and it works well from what I can tell. I know that’s not quite what you were looking for size wise but this size does fit the stock wheel well.

If your gonna buy wheels, I would buy 16” wheels. Way more tire options...

Yup. 33x12.50s on 7" wide rims. They were scary on the road, but no worries of popping a bead! :D

i run 31s on the stock wheels they are a little bulged the centers wear a bit more than the edges but its not terrible. Its been this way for 11 years and maybe 10k miles no regrets
