What’s the purpose of the sleeve around the exhaust manifold? A heat shield? Is it really necessary? Not looking to spend $100 plus on a new manifold. Should I fabricate something out of sheet metal that is similar? Mine has long since rusted away. This is a pic I found on the web.

Look up thermostatic air cleaner (TAC) in the TSM. It's a hot air stove that helps with cold weather driveability and prevents carburetor icing. Useful.

In Florida, it's superfluous. If you lived in North Dakota, different story,

Old thread, but wanted to report in that I ended up fabricating one with some sheet metal in case anyone runs into the same issue. Couldn’t find where they were available any more without purchasing a whole new 304 manifold. I’m no professional, but I think it will work.
