Well, I would not pull the engine and put the old clutch kit back. Especially on a car where I did not know the history very well. Too much risk. You pretty much have to put new parts in, unless it's a choice between car parts and food/rent.

Dry, not sure how many miles but the OD read 87 and he said the speedo didn't work when he drove it.

I'm going to pull the spark plug wire off the right bank cyl and see what happens.

I do have a '86 258 in the shop, needs a piston but not sure if his tranny will bolt up? Not even sure what tranny he has / 3spd.

He really wants an auto but he might have to settle for some sort of combination.

I do have a T-176 that needs to be rebuilt but I sold my extra D300 (I listened to the WIFE ! ).

I guess he needs to make a decision and spend some $$. I just would like for him to drive it before winter hits.

Pulled the plug wire and no smoke-runs well, BUT, after it go warmed up, it was smoking again, not as bad but when you got on it, all you see is blue and I'm not to sure they would like that in this town.

    Oh well.

Re the 258, the bell and transmission (T15) will bolt up, no problem. One of the two frame towers is different, I forget which one. Parts book says - right side changes. You'll need some bits and pieces to make it work. The drive shaft lengths are different, so that means that the trans/TC is in a slighly different position. Clutch linkage will be different. Lots of little things will be different, but nothing difficult. Note that the 258 never came with a T15 in a CJ, and the T15 is longer than the T14 that did. So holes may not line up.

The right motor mount is different and i think I have one.

He would have to get a D300 cause i don't think the D20 will bolt up to it/T-176.

He's coming over and we will talk.

    Thanks again for the help,
    Jim

Question, what trans does he have in this '74?

    It's a 3spd and I can't remember.

You asked if the existing transmission would bolt up to the 258. It will.

This is not the first time you have skipped over the answer to your question in an earlier post.

No, I'm sorry - I should not be so critical.

OK leakdown test 100% FAIL !

TDC on compression stroke and 15psi of air = air coming out of oil filler tube. When I close off the oil filler tube I can hear a little coming out of the carb as well.

The plug we had in question (cyl 3 on the passenger side) had some oil on it and I did not even have the wire hooked up-oil was clean and that is the cyl I tested for the leak down.

So we are not going to mess w/the engine any more.

FOR SALE if any one wants a engine to rebuild.

Thank you all again for the help,
    Jim

    P.S. Now the fun starts

Rollbar.............Hopefully you learned something.........air out of the filler tube would point to rings as you are putting air pressure on the top of the piston and the only easy exit would be via the rings into the crank case or pan.........as far as the carb. Perhaps intake valves or again an intake manifold gasket leaking in the valley.................Good Luck on your Project!

Yes I learned a whole lot and I thank all of you for your help. Good sticky :)

I must confess, I did have a severe head injury some years back and it does affect me to this day so I try hard and I couldn't have done it w/out you all. Sorry for repetition of questions but sometimes its all I can do to make it click.

    Thanks again,
    Jim

Now to install a 360, stay tuned :)
