Just an FYI: if you want to run a big dry filter element cleaner and can't find one that will fit your 2G since most air cleaners are for four barrels, Speedway Motors sells an adaptor specifically for adapting a 2G to a four barrel air cleaner. :) item 910-11360 $14.95 each.

Also there is a k&n filter/cleaner that will for your 2G WIHOUT the need for an adapter. If you measure the diameter of the 2G's intake and go to K&N's website you can search by sizes etc. I have been running this rig on my CJ5 for around 4+ years and love it.....I'll try to find the part number to my aircleaner and post it...also IF anyone wants pics just let me know I'll be happy to take some and post them.

Most companies do make the aircleaner base in a 2 5/8" body they just aren't stocked and have to be ordered.

to the best of my knowledge, my paper element air filter and carb adapter came off of a late 60's/early 70's Chevy truck. I'm not sure which chevy models/years came with a 2G, but it fits and works perfectly.

maybe so, most FLAPS I have been to recently don't have anything like that, although I remember seeing them before. Just listing an alternative. Speedway has some cool stuff, lots of dirt racer stuff, but if you are running a 2300 cc Pinto in your flatty, they have hop up stuff. They also sell 2G carbs, but some are pretty pricy$$$. Also a source for small (350CFM) Holley 2 barrel carbs and heim joints for doing the tie rod mod listed on the tech page. That is where I first heard of them. Just some harmless info.......:)

I am running a paper element and I got the adapter at the parts store. It is a Mr. Gasket and it clears all linkage. It was not too expensive either. Just my two cents though.

Ahh, this thread's been comatose for 10 years. [IMG] [IMG]

Since I was unable to PM you, would you mind posting pics of your open element air cleaner and sharing the part number?
Hopefully you're still running that K&N setup.

In fact, anyone reading this feel free to share photos of your 2G running an open element/paper filter setup.

I'm trying to fix the Bubba-made baling wire and chewing gum fabbed air cleaner the PO had on this Dauntless of mine.

My Jeep came with an Edelbrock open air element filter with a plastic adapter to fit the 2G carb. It has been removed and the oil bath put back on.
    Here's a pic

Beach66Bum: I’m unable at this time to see your pic on this fickle Apple product I’m using.

From what I am seeing, most of the currently available air cleaner assemblies that require NO adapter for the 2 5/8” (inlet diameter) Rochester 2G are for a small air filter/air cleaner housing no larger than say 6 inches+/- in diameter. Such air cleaners are ostensibly intended for the hot rodder’s triple 2G carburetor setup to ensure there is no intereference from the other carburetors in the row.
I don’t want one of those small air cleaners in the interests of maximum air flow—I think they are quite restrictive on a single 2G because of the lack of surface area.... plus they look awkward.

I understand that if you’re going to run a 5 1/8” to 2 5/8” air cleaner adapter (which opens up a ton of 4 bbl air cleaner options), this billet aluminum (not plastic) one from Speedway is the way to go, I just have not seen or read of what is involved in the install procedure or any discussion of the finer points——i.e. it appears you’d need or want a gasket top and bottom for maximum sealing.

I just wanted to see someone’s entire setup, ideally using the Speedway Motors adapter part #91011360.

Did you ever seal your spacer to air cleaner gap?

Your setup is not exactly what I have in mind. I would love to use an old paper-element-type off of another car that also used the Rochester 2G, but that's not really feasible, guaranteed or easy to find.

Surely there's someone using either an air cleaner at least 10" in diameter that's designed to fit the 2G or one of similar size that needs a plastic or metal adapter?

Thought I would show what I had done to make an adaptor.
I had original bought a 4 barrel air cleaner assembly along with the Mr .Gasket adaptor. The adaptor interfered with the manual choke but since this is mostly a summertime vehicle it didn't matter much. The adaptor broke rather quickly, I thought that maybe I had just tightened the wing nut too much and bought a second one. It broke in a short time as well. I then took a fuel & oil resistant plastic funnel and cut the narrow end to the 2G carb neck size and the other end was trimmed to the 4 barrel filter base size. This setup clears the manual choke mechanism has lasted about 25+- years. I think the funnel was about $1.50 or so back then.

Many thanks for sharing your approach OzFin. It looks and probably functions like a velocity stack.

I found a few options out there for a decent size air cleaner that fits the 2 5/8" air horn inlet of the 2G:

    There's a really expensive K&N setup, the 10" air cleaner assembly #60-1130
But at $136, that's way more than I intend to spend. I mean come on.
It appears to be a direct fit though and not some cobbled together kit with a plastic adapter.

Another K&N, 9" air cleaner #60-1070, still in $100 range and direct fit.

Another is the Mr. Gasket 10" air cleaner #9798
$30 but not so stellar reviews.

And the Speedway Motors 10" air cleaner #2401195
It's an adapter style like the Mr. Gasket one and @$14.99 I'm gonna give it a try.

Part of the size preference is due to the small "soup can" size air cleaners which look awkward on the Dauntless. Too big and it will dwarf the engine and be obtrusive in regards to other components under the the hood.
Bigger is typically better in regards to an air cleaner, in that you're providing as much surface area as possible for filtering and assuring a good CFM air flow...

Will report back with a review.

For reference that's a14" filter assembly on mine & it does seem a bit big. I would likely go with something about 12" if I were to replace it...possibly even a 10".

    A 12" diameter x 3" tall would net about 113 square inches of filter area (12x 3.14 x 3=113.04)
    That 14" x 4" filter is about 176 square inches (14 x 3.14 x 4= 175.84)

I believe that if just going by "looks" the engine looks best when the filter assembly doesn't overhang the valve covers.
Years ago when I bought that filter assembly at the local parts store the choice was either that 14" or the dinky soup can style, now days ( especially with the internet) there's so many more options with places like Speedway, Jegs, Summit, etc.)

Hellion, post up some pictures when you get the 10" Speedway unit installed. I like the looks and am curious what you will think about quality and fit of the adaptor.
