    Re: Dana 44 question

Don't mean to go off subject here, but personaly, I've found the trac lok to be a poor unit. I'd be hard pressed to spend the time or money to install one in any of my rigs. Spend the extra cash and get a better unit. I'm a fan of the powr lok's myself, as well as a number of the torque sensing units on the market.

There's a trac-loc in my TJ, and unless there's a wheel off the ground, it works very well. I wouldn't trade it for something less predictable like a detroit, on a daily driver that is. I guess you said you wouldn't install one, I suppose you've got a point there. You might as well get what you want.

Agreed. The Power Lok is a far superior LSD. At least IMO.

I guess I will look into the Powr-lok. I read some things about it and would like to know where to buy the unit? Does it fit the '71 D44?
    Thanks.

Installed one in the rear axle when I regeared it. Called around, but couldn't beat Randy's ring and pinion on price (about $100 cheaper than rest). Had the choice of 'street' and 'race' clutch packs for the same price. (took the 'race') cost about $450 back in sept '05.

You could also surf Ebay and, if you’re patient, be able to find a steal.

The trac-lock, or as some call it "crap-lock" is a one piece cast unit with one pinion shaft and two pinion (spider) gears and of course two side gears. The clutches go between the side gears and case. The preload isn't great on them when new and wear out fairly quickly. They have a tendency to crack the case in half or wear the pinion shaft out where it goes through the case and also wear out the case at this point. The pinion gears also have a tendency to crack and break too. About a year and a half ago I inspected about 20 or 30 trac locks for a local company and ended up keeping for them about 3 or 4. The rest were worn out beyond repair or broken. The Powerlock is a two piece unit where the case halves bolt together. It has two pinion shafts, 4 pinion gears (spiders) and of course two side gears. It is fully rebuildable and is one of the strongest limited slips available for the 44. The clutch packs can be set to different preloads for different needs as well using a combination of clutch plates. The "Race" version mentioned above will have a tighter preload than the "street" version. Whomever you talk to about getting one will need to know axle spline count (yours "should" be 30) and gear ratio. There are two series of case, one called 3 series which fits 2.54 gears to 3.73 gears and "4" series which fits 3.92 gears down to 5.38 gears for the 44. Both Limited Slips require a Friction modifier to be added to the gear oil for proper operation. Nickmil.

    Here ya go Top.
Found this search’n Ebay and thought you might be interested.

$300 is an ok price, you could find cheaper used but then you’d have to rebuild it and it sounds like this one’s ready to go with the heavier set up like you wanted.
At any rate, just thought I’d let ya know.

powr lok's were quite common in Internationals. You might want to keep an eye on sale section of the binder forums.

Has anyone had experience with the older design True Trac in a rear Dana 44 ?

I heard there may have been a problem with them , just trying to confirm it .
Also how hard would it be to install this , do you have to know how to set up gears , or could a joe lunch bucket do this?

Would it be worth putting this in a rear 44 , withthe jeep haveing a quick lok in the front Dana 30 .? :? Thanks
