Jerry and I got the 225 running this afternoon! hooked up a battery, poured a little gas in the carb and stuck the fuel line in a gas can (gas tank not hooked up).

VAROOM! It fired without hesitation --or blue smoke! 40PSI oil WOO HOO! Very smooth and no engine shake

We let it run for a while up to temperature and soon we heard what sounded like faint valve train clatter. It wasn't the typical lifter ticking either. We couldn't isolate it to any particular bank. As Jerry put it --it almost sounded like a diesel. Timing chain maybe? Maybe this is normal on the 225?

I looked into the valve covers while still running and could see some oil at the bottom.

    Any ideas?

no great sea of oil to be found in the those valve covers
take a long handled screwdriver and put on timing cover while engine is running
put ear down to handle and listen
whatever noise is inside will be heard on that handle
BE VERY CAREFUL WHILE DOING THIS...PERSONAL INJURY VERY POSSIBLE IF CARE NOT TAKEN !!!!!!!!!
sometimes you can just feel it with your hand on the handle

The timing chains are notorious for slapping the cover when they get loose, and/or the tensioner wears. Usually only make noise at idle.

I already listened to the engine with a piece of wood (couldn't find short broomhandle) and the sound was consistent everywhere.

The tensioner is a good place to start.

mine makes a similar noise. have it narrowed down to passenger bank, middle to rear (isn't aways in same place either  ) doesn't matter about engine speed. no change in pitch/whine/tone. never heard on driver side, might have to do w/occasional back fire though on pass side?
    sticking lifter on 4/6?

MIne was making some funky noises a few years ago and come to find out the tensioner had broken off so the chain was floppier than a puppy dogs ear.. I also had a lot of wear in the rockers from the lack of oil caused by the timing chain eating itself and throwing metal into the oil pan and clogging the oil pickup....

Tying to recall how to replace the tension adjuster on a v-6. Assume I have to remove the harmoic balancer, wtr pump and front cover, right?

Yep, checked oil prior to starting it. Full of oil and no leaks!
