225 Odd-Fire??

    Hello,

    I'm trying to determine the v6 motor that's inside my '71 CJ5 Jeep.

    The casting number on the block is 991556. I have yet to locate a source for this casting number. I have seen 991503 identified as a '67-'71 block, but again nothing for 991556.

    I went down to the machine shop and now that the block has been boiled and cleaned, I can now read the numbers 991503 on it. I mis-read the numbers in my previous post.

    Thanks to all who took the time to offer me assistance!

    Have any of you guy's run into this?

    Also, the PVC valve is located in the valve cover and is not on the intake manifold. Sources of information states that this is a 225 Odd-Fire. Would this be correct?

    The EGR would be attached to the intake manifold a la 231; the 225 never used an EGR valve.
    The PCV valve is located on/in the valve cover.

    Thanks Guys!

    and you're right, it is the PCV valve not the EGR. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

    quick sure fire way is to remove oil filler cap on valve cover and look and see if it has a rocker arm shaft . if it does it a 225

    Both 225's and 231's used a rocker arm shaft.

    Pull the pan and look at the crank if there is any question. Might take a bit longer, but you will know for sure.

    Not a 225 crank, but it helps to have pictures of an OF Crank for the journals:

    Thanks a heck of a lot guys!

    This has definitely helped me!

    I did go back down to the machine shop, and now that the block has been boiled and cleaned, I can now read the casting #991503!! Makes a lot more sense now!

    Also, the good thing I found is that the motor does appear to be original '71 that has never been bored, and probably never has been opened up before. The rod bearings, once removed still have the GM stamp on them.

    Looking forward to getting it back and preparing for placement back into the Jeep!
