Is there a list of parts that interchange from the 198 to the 225? .... withholding the different block and pistons.

    I'm working with a Buick 225 from the CJ5:
Block Casting # 1381623 stamped "KNLH" (the N isnt certain) 1967 to '74 casting #, stamped earlier year?
Head Casting # B-1376348 (W/Air pump injection ports)
    Intake casting# B-1378704

I also have a Buick 198 with early bell housing BP:
    Block Casting # 1349430 '61-63
    Head Casting# 1354391
    Intake Casting# 1351573

I've searched a decent amount and only found vague references that some things may fit.
    TIA - Thean

EDIT: add the crank to the not interchangeable, different stroke.

The 225 is basically 6/8 of the Buick 300 cubic inch V8. The 300 was produced as a replacement for the aluminum 215 V8. It's said that the 198 has more in common with the 215 than the later 225-231-300-340-350 series Buick engines. The 198/215 bell pattern is different from the later BOP pattern that all the rest of these Buick engines have. There is a book that will tell you a lot more - How to Hotrod Your Buick V6: Buick Motor Division: 9780895865144: Amazon.com: Books - though it may not tell you exactly what you want to know about the 198. Over the past decade, a few owners with swapped-in 198s have asked similar questions. My impression was that not much carries over, and repairing a 198 inexpensively is rather difficult. Thus I'm pretty skeptical that spending a lot of time and effort researching the 198 is going to have much of a payoff.

What had you hoped to use from the 198?

Does the 198 run? If not, it's just an oddball core engine. Its main value is as a complete engine. If you are curious, you might try to make it run or partly disassemble and measure the bores, journals, etc. If it's in good condition, you may be able to find a buyer for it complete ... may take a while to sell.

Primarily the intake, heads (inc. rocker assemblies) and the oil pump/timing chain cover assembly. I am hesitant to tear it down though, just to measure it out and find out none of the parts i need cross over. I haven't found any definitive info on what pieces actually cross over. Thus my original post. I may just leave it together and pass it along to someone that could use the parts for their own 198 build.
Edit: 198 does not run. Currently its stuck somewhere in the bottom end. All valve train moves freely. I am guessing that the rings have corroded themselves to the cylinder walls. Pumped cylinders full of ATF, will probably tap the top of the pistons with a brass punch in a few days to see if the harmonics free it up.

Use a block of wood, like a 2 x4, on the end grain. Wood is a lot more friendly to the pistons than metal. Let it soak with the atf for a week or more.

I agree. I used 2x4s to drive out pistons on the 225 block. Heads are still on this one, so working through the spark plug port. Guess I could use a wood dowel rod? Tapped on all cylinders after soaking in ATF for 24+ hours and it rolls over now!

i love my 198. yes, parts are harder to find and written resources too, but its a cool little motor. Its the Odd fire sound that i really like. Did a partial tear down and putting back together new waterpump, fuel pump, carb rebuild, etc. Adding powersteering pump too. Took FOREVER to find the bracket. The alt bracket is not correct as i think the 198 had a mount that had the alt/generator low not high. I would try to a low bracket if i could find one, but i think the fender/wheel well or a jeep is too tight.

My big issue now is trying to find the right throwout bearing for the clutch as i cannot get the adjustments to where the disengagement is half pedal...it to the floor only and barely that

Where did you find a waterpump for a 198? They are different from a 225 and I can't find one without getting mine rebuilt.

It was a year or two ago...I cant remember, but they were on rockauto, or one of those big warehouses. I just looked on RA now and dont see any. Maybe those are getting scarce now too.

Did you check Napa? Looks like you can order one there. Good luck!

I just ordered one from Napa. I looked everywhere about a year ago and couldn't find one anywhere. We will see if it is actually a 198 pump when it gets here.

Go to the resources and download the casting interchange -
    Buick V6 Casting Numbers

Otherwise, did up a copy of Pat Ganahals V6 performance.
