My jeep appears to be mostly all original and i never paid attention to whether it had a limited slip or locker in it before but the other day, i was pulling with my jeep and the rear tires broke loose and left 2 black marks on the road where the tires were turning over.

is there an option that would have been original or would it have to have been added afterwards? it is a flanged offset d44.

OEM limited slip option for the flanged 44 would be the Trac Loc (doesn't seem to be highly thought of - at least not compared to the prior power lock). I have only had the Trac Loc in my two CJs - pretty much useless on mine.

If you open it up...a trac loc will look like this:

Another way to check is to raise the back end of the jeep off the ground (both rear wheel off the ground). Put transmission in neutral and slowly spin one wheel forward - the wheel on the other side should also spin forward if it has a limited slip. If its open diff, then the opposite wheel would spin in the opposite direction.

At least that's how I think it should it work...

X2 on what Fino says! Raising both rear wheels in the air and turning one side and watching the other side will tell.
My brother had a bullnose Commando he put a built Chev 454 in, and with a stock open diff, it would consistently put down a pair of black lines on launch, with no limited slip.
