I am a new member, a new jeep owner and this is my first tech thread, I recently obtained a '66 cj5. The drivers seat looks it has been replaced with a newer type. As I was surfing this forum, I have determined that my passenger seat is original to the CJ5 and that it should be identical to the drivers seat .
The blue seat shown in the attached photo is the drivers seat that I am trying to identify . I removed the seats so as to sevice the gas tank and floor area.
Because the blue seat seems to fit the seat frame, I am assuming that it is a later jeep seat.
My first impression was that it was an early Mustang seat.
I want to recover the passenger seat and then re-position it as the drivers seat. I believe the driver and passenger seats were the same from the factory...correct?
The blue seat is not comfortable in this early CJ5 and having no passenger seat allows more room to haul my dog around.
If the blue seat is a jeep seat, I will keep it for another jeeper. If not I will chuck it. Does anyone recognize it? [IMG] [IMG]

I'm the original owner of my 66 cj5 and I can say that your brown seat is the original somewhat-bucket seat. I wish I had that bucket form of seat today, but when I got rips in the leather/plastic (like yours), I mistakenly gave both seats to a local upholsterer and he returned to me flat seats. I was too young and naive (in the 1980s) to insist he re-do.

I'm going to save your picture and eventually take my current seats for restoration to original. Ron

The blue seat is a van seat of some type, maybe Ford or Dodge. Not Jeep. The original left and right sides are different because the right folds ("fold and tumble") and the left is rigid. The driver's seat also has adjustment rails, passenger does not.

I don't think either of those are correct for 1966..............My 65 had the 60/40 seat.........meaning the drivers seat was wide while the separate passenger seat was narrow that flipped forward to access the tool box below.
Check this thread: Making my CJ-5 into a CJ-6 / II look at my Blue CJ5 and those were original seats.

Buckets were new for 1966. If I remember correctly, when I bought my CJ5 in 1966 in Ohio, one of the special features the salesman was hyping was that the new 1966 cj5s had buckets. Apparently 1965 did not. That brown colored bucket with horizontal ribbing pictured above by D. Whitton is correct for 1966, as that color, style, and ribbing came with my 'gold beige' CJ5 color

    To all,

These are the seats that 36rd6 was referring to. The seats are in an unmolested 66 with V6 and 10,661 on the odometer. The jeep belong to a local who used it only for hunting and had a Kelley hardtop on it. The original owner passed away and his daughter kept the jeep for the memories of her dad. Many, many years later after his passing, she decided to sell the jeep. It was purchased by another individual who couldn't get it to run, so he put on the local CL and I bought it. The jeep has been repainted, but is well preserved.

I have done the brakes, cylinders, shoes, lines, etc. Rebuilt the T86 using T 90 gears, had to change one of the tower shift forks, but it worked out great. Rebuilt the carb, tune up, etc.

Still have to do some more, but will wait until the snow melts and the temperatures get a wee bit warmer.

    Frank

Cool. I like the shift stalk with a dogleg. IIRC these only appeared in the late 60s CJs or Commandos with a V6.

I have not seen the horizontal ribs as original. Are these seat covers?

    Timgr,

I believe they are original to the jeep. If you look at the other photos that 36rd6 posted in the initial inquiry in another thread, you can see the holes in the seats from the previous owner. One of the other interesting things, it only has a choke cable, no throttle cable or hole for one on the dash. It appears that the choke cable also opens the carb throttle a wee bit when pulled.

My original '67 seats looked just like those beige ones, but black.

Also, I believe the throttle cable was only on 4cyl models. My 4cyl has throttle and choke, but my v6 has only choke.

Here is a photo of the dash on the 6t6 V6
On my previous post, I stated there was not a hole for the throttle cable. I was wrong, there is plug cap below the choke cable.
    My bad
Yes, the speedometer cable was hooked up to the transfer case when I bought the jeep and it works.

The blue seat looks like Econoline to me. Matches a 69 I used to work from. The crooked shifter seems to follow a T86 but I could be wrong.

I agree with this photo being a '66. It has the "later" passenger seat that mounts in the door opening, as opposed to the '65 the hinged on the tool box. It has a V6 (as did very late '65), and still has the snorkel cutout that disappeared very late in the '66 model year.
